The first time I saw an otherwise dorky uptight looking cop walk in with a full crayon looking mess on his arms it was very disturbing. I want to say this was around 2010??? I hadn't really thought about the influence of the war etc. I do recall chatting with a guy that ran recruiting and I told him I figured finding cops with guys coming out of dod must be easier. He said nope, they have too much baggage. Didn't like them as candidates.
I never work with real patrol type cops. The higher ups are usually pretty chill...or some form of dei. Thinking about this, I saw a huge number of the chill civilian types retire out through COVID. It's not a good trend. And a similar stock of candidates to replace them are not from the same category, it's way more the shit group you mentioned above. Normal guys that probably hired on in the early 90s before dei and BLM are gone and the same types of dudes wouldn't even consider a career in LE now. |

It's why so many midsize PDs have APCs as "riot control vehicles" despite never having seen a riot and the local budget being unable to afford them otherwise I remember Gingrich/Ron Paul types at the time saying that these sorts of linkages would lead to a militarization of local PDs and neocons scoffing it off. Like so many of their other predictions, those turned out to be spot on A lot of words have been written about the wages of hiring traumatized warfighters into PD positions and it was a good lib cause celebré for a while but with the left's turn against police culture in general you don't hear much about it these days |

Date: June 13th, 2025 3:46 AM Author: Zombie-like Vigorous Native yeah the old paleoconservative consensus about police was much more ambivalent about their role and status in society than the later neocon notions about them. neocons have no issue with the militarization of police (that movement itself just being a Reagan-wrapped skinsuit for the ultrawealthy to promote a sort of corporatist fascist option for stakeholders to take when domestic unrest or calls for reform get too out of hand) and widely supported it for optics in their typical (and this is charitable; i suspect the real reasons are more sinister) myopia about what's good for the health of american communities down the line it's a major issue. no locale that isn't strictly urban or plagued by dense violent crime clusters needs APCs and hundreds of tactical long rifles and automatics available in the PD armory; those same paleocons and libertarians correctly surmised that these militarized PDs would become a tool for state repression down the line, and the blowback for traditionally "right wing" causes under fire by these same consequences has been palpable re: covid response, police enforcement of bizarre leftist policies, etc |
