i dont remember anything in ap euro about this. nobody talks about it. and i suppose most fairly educated people who arent MFEs dont have a clue about it.

recently started learning about the lead up to the unification an aftermath. interesting stuff.

europe was such a clusterfuck in the 1800s that led to ww1.

i feel like garibaldi and the companions are pretty popular topics

the papal states, two sicilies, these get some coverage in early modern european history. iirc italian literacy rates were pretty low and even more so amongst italians that came to america so the italian diaspora here haven't been the best custodians of italian history

hmm, who is garibaldi compared to? ive barely even heard of him. 99.9% of americans probably think he's a chocolate company.

ive been to rome a couple times and know the big victor emanual monument and knew he was some modern italian ruler, but had literally no idea who the fuck he is.

the papal states are interesting to me. i dont undersand how they developed from the renaissance era.

kemal ataturk maybe or some other modernizing "father of the nation". he was a bit more of an outsider i guess but he's still a pretty big deal for italians in the era of the republic. i had an italian professor who talked about him more than a few times

the papal states' history is odd and definitely undertaught but i find it pretty interesting whenever i see something about it. italy was a lot less centralized compared to e.g. the contemporary hapsburg or prussian holdings and the idea of italians as italians first came about fairly late compared to german/HRE racial/national consciousness. the idea of an italian as an italian and not part of a regional identity like a savoyard or neapolitan didn't start getting traction until (don't quote me on this) probably mid 1800s, 1865, the liberal revolutions of the era

i think the original idea behind pepin's donation of fiefs was to give the pope a means of defending the sanctity of the vatican and it kind of snowballed from there, depending on the reigning pope. in garibaldi's era they were far less popular but a thousand something years is a pretty good run
