Again, I'm doing this a firm at a time. I might get bored with it. I might include something like percentages if I feel like it. I don't care if I made mistakes and the numbers don't add up, it's close enough. Spare me your complaints about the data, about how some have faster partnership tracks than others, about school size. In fact, I already see I screwed up some math on one and made a big mistake in last year's data. Oh well. Last year's here: http://www.xoxohth.com/thread.php?thread_id=1563853&mc=41&forum_id=2

the imbalance b/w Chicago and Northwestern is magnified when you consider two things: (1) Northwestern graduates a class that is 75 students larger (2) Northwestern places a clear majority of its grads in Chicago, whereas UChi grads disperse far more nationally.

Does this mean Illinois is placing 40% of the class in Chicago BIGLAW? With other cities, it means Illinois is half going to BIGLAW. Wtf?

No, it's just a rough metric to account for class size. It's a ratio of all Chicago BIGLAW associates to a single graduating class.

Maybe I need to get more coffee, but how I am reading this wrong.

Illinois had 93 SAs this year in 9 selected Chicago BIGLAW firms. Illinois also has a class of 225 law students. That means of just 9 selected firms (admittedly, a good portion of Chicago BIGLAW and Illinois' target market), 41.3% of the Illinois class is represented. Adding in the few who go to NYC, DC, whatever, we're looking at something like half of the University of Illinois going into BIGLAW. That seems insanely high.

It isn't SAs, it's all associates. Did you really think Kirkland had almost 300 summer associates?

The SA numbers are less useful. They have split summers, no-offers, clerks who never come back, and so on. And firms often don't release these figures, so someone has to figure them out. I think XO used to try to compile this stuff back in the day when people cared and stickies mattered.

No they don't. Better to take money from one of the local TTTs than to pay full freight at the likes of Indiana in hopes of snagging Chicago Biglaw.

It's associates. They could have graduated in 2002 or 2005 or 2008 or 2011, but they're actual associates spread across a decade.

Weird that there are practically no YLS or SLS associates in Chicago. Is that self-selection, or do none of these firms hire from those two schools (or both)?

that's total associate count, not SA's

I'd guestimate that before ITE, Kirkland Chicago was closer to 350 and Skadden NYC was closer to 700

In other news, Chicago firms have definitely upticked hiring compared to the last few years:

K&E: 53 SA's

Sidley: 40 SA's

Mayer Brown: 29 SA's

Winston: 20 SA's

Jenner: 19-20 SA's (from what I have been told)

Still pretty pathetic but at least it's an improvement.
