My boyfriend was just told he will be getting an offer from one of the firms he is splitting his summer with (he was told through unofficial channels). The problem is, he hates both firms. He has about a 3.1 now. (We have a 3.2 median at Michigan.) Assuming he has at least one offer from a Vault firm b/w 50-75, and perhaps another one from a non-Vault 100 firm, how marketable will he be to better firms during 3L OCI? Any advice? Any thoughts on the sorts of firms he should be targeting? What's the best he can hope for? (He wants to be in California.)

yeah but probably not because of their GPA. Anyone who plays their cards halfway right and has above a 3.0 should be able to get biglaw at Mich. THose people who are "struggling" probably have no work experience, ttt personalities, and strategized poorly for OCI.

He'll have less information about some other firm he'd take a job with as a 3L. Unless he's really sure that he doesn't want either of his offers, he should really take one.

More info. Where were the firms he summered at? Which work did he like? He should probably just be looking at non- or low-Vault firms that do the type of work he likes, do as many interviews as he can, and see how he likes the people.

An offer doesn't hurt, but with below-median grades he's very unlikely to be able to move up in the rankings at 3L OCI ... 3L OCI is usually supposed to be a bit more competitive than 2L, and it doesn't sound like he's added much in the way of grades/law-review/etc. in the intervening year. So he should look to move down the rankings to a firm he likes more. He might be able to move parallel or up if he can really sell himself as someone who's interested in and good at the particular area of law that he likes, but his best bets are probably lower-ranked firms.

In terms of future mobility, do you think he is better off taking the offer at the better firm, and then moving to a smaller firm in a couple of years?
