There is no similar public narrative for the cashiers at Walmart, Target, Safeway, etc., who are almost certainly engaged in higher risk encounters. Teachers are lionized as martyrs headed to the trenches of Verdun.
Watching the public eat this up and regurgitate it with pithy Facebook memes and drawings -- without even considering the deleterious impact on elementary school aged children who cannot learn effectively with a laptop or the parents who will need to quit their jobs -- is an insane study in social media groupthink. There is no nuance. No critical thought. Any attempt to consider the social utility of school and the potential risk to childhood development is met with "WHY DO U HATE SCIENCE?!" or some other middling IQ strawman. |

my garbled point was that last spring everyone i talked to or read online seemed to support that idea. The APA supported it. My kids principal supported it.
Then Trump said the shit about holding back fed funds to schools that dont open, and within days there are think pieces and online arguments about death-schools and even the APA backtracked
Trump seemed to catalyze them and now it's a pro-Trump/anti-Trump issue

I saw in a study somewhere that the avg teacher's union member (pub school) has something like a 1030 SAT score, attends a school ranked lower than Flagship State U in their region, takes zero or almost zero substantive classes in whatever subject they ultimately teach (aside from overlap w minimum distribution requirements like US History 101, and Introduction to Biology for Non Science Majors), and despite the obviously shit level of competition in the school of education still graduates on avg with like a 3.09 gpa.
fuck them: they're lucky to make $30k babysitting, and if six hour days with 3.5 months vacation/yr is more than they can bear they can go work retail or be a cashier. |

The shit salary they pay her just isnt worth it. If she can’t teach remote, she’ll use as much paid leave and other similar stuff as possible until they fire her. Either way, we’ll be fine. |
