Rodan & Fields is different because the products actually don't suck (though they are overpriced), but it's not something I would ever get involved in.
What's more illuminating about the MLM craze is that it shows what some people value in a career, namely flexibility and the ability to set your own hours. People are OK with trading a high salary for the ability to work from home in a more flexible setup, especially if they have families or other demands. They'd rather be a R&F consultant than be a capitalist workpig putting on an uncomfortable suit every day and braving the 456 train. |

That's an interesting take. Intuitively, I look at it the opposite way. Prices have gone up so much because of dual-income families, and social media and shit has really placed a spotlight on keeping up with the Joneses, that even women who really can't or don't want to work a 9-5 are still trying to make extra money. |

It's hard for someone with a traditionally middle class (or even UMC) income to raise a family on that sole income these days, so sometimes the nonbreadwinner spouse has to result to MLM to bring in some extra cash in a way that still allows her to still be a primary caregiver.
It's a combo of flexibility becoming more valuable and the need to have two incomes, even if the secondary income is quite meager and only pays for splurge expenses. |
