I definitely thought it would make more sense for both sides in a state with low cost of living, sufficient infrastructure to accommodate a big company, and available inexpensive middle income housing to accommodate an influx of people. Somewhere that was big before, but with a dwindling population made sense to me. Maybe Detroit (though I don’t know Detroit well enough to be sure).
It seems like people are arguing with my post because they think Amazon was a shitty deal. But that’s not inconsistent with my post and I wouldn’t gripe with that. I just thought the analysis of AOC’s arguments was spot on. |

AOC knows full-well that HQ2 would probably be a benefit for NY's balance sheet. But fuck Amazon. What has Amazon done to deserve this, as opposed to, literally any other fucking business that wants to move to NYC? How many residents from Queens work at Amazon? What about the bodegas in Brooklyn, how are they doing from Amazon? Is unemployment in NYC even a problem--and if it is, are we sure more ancillary Seamless, SweetGreen, and Uber jobs are going to help? What about all the millennial residents who have been waiting, and waiting to buy a house? Who would benefit from rising real estate prices in NYC? Not you or me.
So fuck Amazon. Here's an idea: If we really need the extra tax juice in the state coffers, maybe we shouldn't have let Amazon get away scott-free on sales tax for a decade. And if they really want to come here, they can rebuild the L and F lines themselves.
