why not get the 1pt and get yourself within 8, and then deal with getting a 2pt conv later. why knock yourself out of the game by missing a 2pt and staying down by 9?

You're asking for logic from a school full of people with the intellect of Ogre from The Revenge of the Nerds. All you really need to know is FUCK OHIO

It was a fine decision because you'd rather have more info sooner, with more time remaining on the clock so you can adjust accordingly.
They needed at least one 2 point conversion. If you miss it with 2:30 left, you can call your times out differently, go for an onside kick, run an extra fast hurry up, get inside the 40, kick an fg, then go for the onside kick... If you miss it as time expires when you're down 2, you're done here.
On top of that, it left open the possibility to go for the W in regulation. If OSU made the first 2 point attempt then scored to get within 1 as time expired, going for 2 there would have been a reasonable call, instead of trying your luck in OT.
