I'm considering move into a studio apt. after years of living alone in 1 or 2 bedroom units. Obviously, it would cut down on cost and I could live in a better location (downtown).

The unit I'm considering has this layout: http://i.imgur.com/3ZC6LtU.png

Can anyone here tell me what that would be like? I've yet to view the apt, so I have no idea how they arrange their furniture. Fortunately, I don't have much in the way of furniture or clutter. But I have no idea if my twin-size bed could fit in that "alcove."

Really studios are fine if you don't have much furniture and can deal with a mini kitchen. The mini kitchen is by far the worst part imo, if you don't plan to bring girls over much.

ca. 2001.

I had the pleasure of living in a studio apartment in jersey where the door was ON THE FUCKING STREET.

Needless to say, I dealt with all types of crazy shit. Notwithstanding shooing away mexicans from my door, I made it as cozy as I could, but your bed doubling as your couch and dining table is just not worth it from experience.

lol...I did get a lot of pussy back then though.

For comparison, see the second layout I posted above in the "For $5 more" comment. It's not much more, is much larger (and comes with closetS!) but is above a noisy bar. They're just a block apart, so no difference in location.

I have lived in several studios over the years. I loved it. You have fewer things. It's liberating.

The major problem with the layout you posted is that it lacks any closet space. You need a closet, even a small one, to put your clothes in. So now you will have to buy a closet and fit it in the little space you have. Other than that it looks good.

I have two kids so city living in a studio is not possible for me. I envy you. It's going to be fun!

I WOULD NOT. I like my peace and quiet. That's the thing with city living. You enjoy all the hustle and bustle but at the end of the day you need to get away from it all and retire in some peace. I would never live above a bar.

Bro, your first layout is fine. You are just going to have to get creative with the space a bit. Go to Ikea and get one of those bed with drawers or something. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/categories/departments/bedroom/25205/

It's prob not MFH at least (I don't think studios with laundry are all that common there). Those ikea pax wardrobe closets are 180 though, you can hold more shit than most crappy studio closets.

is it second floor over a bar? how high up is the first one? first one has the alcove so it's more like a shitty 1br but the other one has the bigger closets and a defined kitchen. the second one you'd have to be smart about how you lay out the sleeping area and you'd want to buy dividers that will prob cost as much as a standing closet for the second one.

First apt. is third floor. Ground level is a fancy restaurant, second level is apartments, third level is more apartments. Nothing on fourth level.

because it's above a bar and the other one has no one above you. the $800 ones are all decked out, something basic without doors will be like <$300. if you know someone with a pickup you can also get one on CL for basically free.

You can buy a nice enough standing closet thing with doors for like $200. A rack to hang clothes is like $20.

oh, you're good then. early 20s is only appropriate time for this...or, you know, poverty. But if you have a choice, once 27ish hits, step up.

Washer/dryer and a balcony in a studio? This is literally the POTUS of studios. Very cr bachelor pad if you're young and this is in a sweet part of town.

Does it have storage, though? Studios can very easily turn into cramped rat's nests if you have a ton of shit, and it sounds like you're going to be moving a 1/2BR in here.

Compare with second layout. Walk in closet, W/D, more space, no balcony, but $5 more and directly above a bar.

I am beginning to think that you think that "directly above a bar" is some kind of a plus. If so, you should cop that one. And update us in a month.

Naw, I don't, but I do place a lot of value on space. The one above a bar is nearly 2x as large.

No, but more living space is nice and may tip the scales.

Idk man. Besides the noise issue, which would probably be enough to kill it for me, you're likely to have bugs and vermin living right next to the trash chute, and climbing up through the walks and floors from the restaurant itself.

Fwiw, large studios are more CR than one bedrooms of the same size where the walls just take up space.

the alcove thing works. i know i girl that just installed this curtain thing along the ceiling that made it almost seems like a one bedroom/it was like sleeping in a fort as a kid.

if in NYC i wouldn't want to live directly above a bar/restaurant unless it is recently renovated and the floors are nice. otherwise the mice (which will 100% live inside the walls) will be able to get in your place.
