Sure she goofed on that part, but the underlying motivation for the amendment was to prevent another president from being elected three times like had just happened with FDR. The fact that FDR himself was unaffected by it is sort of irrelevant.

it's common knowledge that FDR's popularity freezing out Republicans prompted the push for a term limit amendment. kind of a surprising blunder by the republicans here.

she's pointing out how Republicans are always changing the rules to rig the system in their favor. i agree its not really worth pointing out since that really the purpose of the republican party: rig the game in favor of wealthy elites and corporations at the expense of the working class...then blame the democrats.

the electoral college is a shitty idea in the 21st century but it wont be abolished. court-packing will happen but only as a response to the Garland seat theft, so Republicans are to blame for that one too.

there are plenty of lengthy threads discussing this. suffice to say that the republicans' power grab, while within the rules, was unprecedented. And so too will be the Dems' court-packing (both unprecedented and within the rules), except Dems will be merely restoring the status quo, rather than seeking to provide themselves an advantage they weren't entitled do, as the republicans did.

You don't know whether it was unprecedented because senators have not always stated their reasons for holding up or rejecting Art III nominations.

As for the status quo, that is preserved by filling Scalia's seat with another conservative. Dems foolishly underestimated republicans on this. They thought they would just roll over an accept a "moderate" appointment to the seat formerly occupied by the most beloved conservative Justice in living memory. More than anything they were just fucking stupid.

"republican" and "democrat" of 1945 are unrelated to the parties who use those terms today. Trying to point to some systemic history of one party vs the other by tracing back themes to this era is ridiculous. Truman vs Dewey exemplifies how much things have changed.

the "system" of the 1940s was completely rigged beyond ways one can even understand today, and it was completely accepted as such. Trying to learn life lessons from FDR, Truman, Dewey era as "Republican bad, democrat good" is absurdity.

also, what is she arguing? That term limits are bad?

The people arguing she's right in substance are wrong as well.

The amendment wasn't retroactive: Truman. the POTUS at the time, would have been eligible to run as often as he wanted as per the text of the amendment.

Even if FDR *HAD* been in office when it was passed it wouldn't have done anything to prevent him from running again.

This is true but I’m just so weary of this constant “gotcha” fact checking bullshit on what was a completely ancillary point. The kind of person gloating over this would’ve done great on law review.

Trump and other republicans fumble their facts all the time and we let it slide because we know what they're really trying say. If you want to beat up on AOC you already have a wealth of material to work with. No need to stretch your credibility by getting MAF about this

The article in the OP says the 22A was "most likely a rebuke" to FDR. It seems like that's the essence of her claim, not that it would affected FDR himself.

It's plain as day she had never even studied the history of the 22A in detail or even read the actual text. It's forcememed by SJWs as example of white supremacy or something, just like the "electoral college is racist" trope.

The anti-intellectualism taking over the left wing is dangerous, just as dangerous as it consuming the right.

It was not a "rebuke" to FDR. It was a bipartisan effort to prevent a single person from becoming effectively POTUS for life, in the vein of FDR. The idea that the problem was FDR himself and not the fact that a 150 year old precedent had been shitted on is stupid.

this is getting into semantics

but agree that the view that this was some "republican" scheme to undermine democracy was a stupid point. That was my point above, I don't understand what point she was making.

It was a rebuke of FDR's decision to not honor the 2 term limit tradition as established by George Washington.

Correct, it was understood that it was ok during wartime and FDR was above reproach, but they didn't want to put the country at risk of having our own hitler.

"The idea was to prevent a future FDR-type situation."

She said it was to prevent FDR himself from being re-elected, not to prevent someone *like* from being re-elected.

To use a contemporary analogy: this would be like, in 2024, Dems passing a bill requiring a POTUS candidate release his tax returns, and saying they did it to stop Trump from running for president.
