Brothers, 3L here, about to graduate from a T14, pretty crappy grades, trying to figure out a way to get some sort of jerb. I'm fine with getting some typical XO killself, etc. insults, but if some of you brehs have some helpful advice that would be pretty 180. Don't want to out myself, interest is corporate, took corporate/transactional classes, don't need biglaw which is already not an option anyway, but just trying to get even small firms to look at my resume

I understand that its May, I've been searching all of 3L year, I just figured since its May might as well turn to XO, as whats the worst that can happen other than insults. I also have zero debt and have fairly wealthy parents so I would rather avoid getting herpes and dying. I know I'm pretty fucked until after bar results but for the month until I start studying, any actual advice?

Sad, but true.

There's nothing redeeming about the ongoing monotony of waking up every morning to no job and no responses in your inbox.

Stop by my supermarket and fill out an application. We'll have you on the front register at first, and before long you'll be gathering carts from the parking lot. In two, maybe three years you'll have a decent chance at assistant manager.

It's funny because when I was 19-21 I never understood how all these doods in that generation managed to do so well for themselves when they were seemingly clueless.

Wasn't till I hit 25-26 that I realize how badly they raped are generation. I hate them all.

I had to pay a $170 transfer fee today for the used car I bought because the pensioner who owned it got special discounts--I mentioned to the admin lady that my generation will never sniff any of those benefits once we reach that age and she laughed and said " I don't think so either."

Seriously man, I could sort of live with them badly fucking over our generation if they weren't such self-righteous dicks about it. Nothing more frustrating than talking to some retarded boomer who whines about our generation being lazy, entitled, stupid, and worthless and acting as though the shitty legal market and bad job market in general is not a big deal and that in their day things were just as bad if not worse (not true) and then pretend as if they weren't the ones to fuck things up to the point that they crashed the damn economy just in time for my 20s, the end of my education, and trying to begin my career

Eh, I was lucky in that they paid my tuition and expenses in law school. They're not thrilled that I didn't perform that great academically, a blow softened by the fact that I am graduating from a top 10 school (parents are sometimes really easily impressed by stupid metrics like rankings), and that I haven't been able to find a job, but at this point, we've reached an understanding where until I find a job, I'll live rent-free with them and provide me with food and the basics while I search for a job. They had actually been fine with providing the basics plus things like money for entertainment here and there, nights out etc but as a K-JD and being 25 and having lived off my parents my whole life, I felt bad and couldn't accept that offer. I'm not obsessed with biglaw, never was, just saw it as a means to an end, I would rather work at a 10 person firm that does work that I find interesting (or at least, as interesting as you can find in the dry world of law) where I'll get good training/mentoring and eke out a middle-class existence

I used to feel that way too but you have to understand the gains of Boomers are nearly universally ill-gotten and bloated so if anything they should be supporting you as they're DUTY.

What got you into law in the first place? Inertia?

I was a political science major, realized close to graduation that I thought political science was boring and useless, and that I should have majored in finance/economics and wanted to work in business, but because it was too late for that and it seemed unlikely I would be able to find entry level work for two years that would be solid enough experience to get into a good MBA program in a few years, I decided to pursue my secondary interest in law, which I'd had since the latter years of high school, and then go into corporate law so that I could (naively as I now know) pursue my interest in business and law. No lawyers in my family, all I knew of law school really was just anecdotal information here and there from friends/parents friends, reading the book "1L" etc. I also stupidly wanted to get the JD, finish, and start my career and making money as fast as I could and it was only a year or two into law school that I realized there was no rush, I'm young, and should have enjoyed my 20s a bit more. I knew that the legal job market wasn't great but I thought it would pick up a bit because I figured, I'm class of 2013 I should be okay (had no idea about OCI and all that really). The only reason I even chose to go to a T14 school was because everything I saw about job prospects seemed to relate to this going to a T14 school thing and so after I scored quite high on the LSAT, I got into much of the lower half of the T14, waitlisted at places like CCN and flash forward three years later, here I am today, unemployed like so many of my friends and other law students, T14 and non-T14 alike, but truly thankful that I am not in the debt-situation that many of my friends and peers are in. What about you? Are you currently working as an attorney or are you in law school as well

Nah man I am in med school--it's pretty shitty too but job prospects are less grim, thankfully.

I once considered law though back in the day...

I'm going to just clarify for the thread. I did not just start searching for jobs today, in May of 2013, right as I'm about to graduate. I have spent the last 2.5 years of law school looking for a permanent job unsuccessfully after whiffing at OCI in 2011, I just created this thread out of desperation and with time running out before bar prep starts to see if any XOers, through the heavy amount of insults I anticipated receiving including yours, actually had some insightful advice. Clearly I was wrong and this will likely be a useless endeavour.

Did the whole networking grind, have applied to all those places or more, went to every alumni networking event my school had to offer and even my undergrad had to offer, have been told numerous times that I interview well. My grades are meh but not THAT meh. Just been unlucky I guess. And no, not asian, white male, probably a 7-8 objectively, 5'10, thin, so no abnormal physical defects holding me back either. A good 30+% of my year still has nothing at graduation so I'm not sure how every moron you know is employed

I've probably done 50+ lunches, have driven to other cities/states even to meet up with an attorney/attorneys, have made connections with around 80/90 alumni that I've been in contact with since 2L year and make sure to follow-up with and stay in good communication with, have spoken with family friends who are attorneys, etc

so maybe you're just an asshole without friends? why aren't your parents' friends finding you jobs.

look at my point of few. you're saying you went to a t14 school and are a decent looking white dude who networked his ass off around the country yet you can't even land a public defender or dept child services legal job? what am i supposed to think? keep in mind that tons of shit law school grads are landing jobs without a hitch.

Honestly, might just be my grades. 3.0 from a T14. The impression I've gotten is that many places assume T14s grade inflate (and yes, they do relative to most law schools) and so to them, my 3.0 in their eyes means I've "failed" law school. That's been the impression I think from many law firms, government is just not really hiring right now and the places that are, I don't have the grades for, as for public interest, you'd be surprised, because my resume doesn't really demonstrate much in the way of public interest, even the version of my resume that's aimed at those jobs, most public interest/volunteer places don't really give me the time of day either

yes they are. they're not landing gt, hk, or even akerman but there's ass loads of firms hiring in miami. shit, the last fla bar journal had like 50 entry level positions. people from fiu, st thomas, nova se, fl gulf coast are getting jobs...anyone from um can find a job. it might only pay $40K and be in kendall but it's there.

akerman is hiring hard. i just got a text from a partner i know real well. she says consumer finance and comm lit.

gt/hk are pretty hard in miami unless you're top 20% t10 or lr editor fsu/uf/um.

i would look at mid-range firms like gunster or broad & cassell or carlton fields.

I'm from Portland. Since you do hiring, in a market like Florida. would my 3.0 from a T14, and being an objectively fairly handsome white guy be enough to land me something in the Florida market? I honestly hadn't applied there because of a complete lack of ties

sorry i'm not much help for entry level but everyone is begging for laterals. i think they regret shitting out good associates a few years ago. or maybe they just want people who proved themselves in shitlaw/midlaw. not sure but check fla bar journal for 3-5yrs experience and it's hiring frenzy.

your best bet is to focus on "boutique" firms in coral gables. trust me.

This actually isn't terrible advice, particularly if your wealthy folks would foot the bill.

Otherwise, see the world, bruh. Grab a backpack and spend the next four months in Asia. You'll never have another chance. It beats living in the basement, working document review, etc.

Or, have you considered smaller markets? Unemployed T14s are a dime a dozen in New York, DC, etc, but probably not so much in places like Pittsburgh, Charlotte, Phoenix, so on.

I mean, if a 3.0 at a T14 is pure shit, does that mean everyone with a 3.0 at the other 186 law schools ranked lower aren't deserving of any sort of gainful employment either? Considering there are bros with 2.5s from big state U with decent jobs out of undergrad, I don't see why a T14 3.0 should make me beyond redemption for a legal job

I think he's saying a 3.0 at a T14 is pure shit because the curve at most of those schools is like a 3.33.

No I know, I understand most have a 3.3 curve, and that I'm below median by a decent amount, so clearly my grades are crappy, but I would hope that going to a T14, having a good undergrad and good grades before that, wouldn't all be negated by a 3.0 GPA. In all of my summer internships during law school I always received great reviews for my work product so while I have yet to master law school exams, I would hope someone would give me a shot because I do think I can produce competent legal work as well as many of my classmates save for probably the top 20% who are in a class of their own

I think it sends a red flag. It says you're smart enough to do well on LSAT and get grades in college, but didn't put in the work in LS. You also have no work experience so you can't rebut this presumption by pointing to a promotion. What reason do you give people if they ask about grades?

then go though Tech Crunch or Hacker News and look for startups w/ < 10 or so people that you can make your self useful for

if you're at a T14 school, there are probably some CS dudes in the undergrad trying to start something, ask around, see if whatever they are trying to start sounds promising to you/ worth your time, see if you can brainstorm ways to add value

there is probably a technology transfer office at your school, see if anything going on there seems promising to you

there is probably professors in the business school who teach an entrapreunership class, see if he has any students in who are starting something that will need legal help
