I think this was pretty common among smaller to midsize regional firms. They just don't give a shit, because there's such an excess supply of JD's out there.

T30, same.

Think I'm going to try to find a decent state clerkship, prosecutor's office, or city law department where I can land on my feet and regroup for a year or two. I realize that my career path is permanently altered, but that might not be such a bad thing. At least I won't have much debt.

Yeah, mine are writing LORs and supposedly doing whatever else they can to help me out. I hadn't thought about asking them to contact other partners they know, but I might try. I've also considered asking the litigation partners I know to put in a good word for me with judges in the area.

Really though, you can't. I mean, you have to do good work and be pleasant all that shit, but many of us no-offers did/said all the right things and still got fucked. Your best bet is to take an offer from a major-market Vault firm, and stay away from midlaw if possible.

Cr. I know three different mid-law firms that take a few people every year with no real intention of hiring anyone unless a superstar summer associate emerges (which is very difficult to do in 10-12 weeks)

Yeah man. What really sucks is that during the boom years, my firm gave offers to their entire summer classes (usually 3-4 people). That meant giving offers to some summers who weren't exactly the best and brightest--many were just mediocre students from the local TTT. Then last year, ITE allowed my firm to snag a few summers with academic qualifications beyond what they were used to hiring, and they couldn't give any of us offers.

2010 grad here. I was also no-offered by my midlaw 2L summer firm (not performance based--no one got an offer).

They dragged it out for a couple months with shit like "oh, we won't be able to make a decision until next year." But I knew what was up when they couldn't give me a firm answer in August.

I wanted to clerk anyway so I had been working on clerkship apps for a couple months already. I seemingly struck out with "on plan" judges (didn't get any calls on the day the plan kicked in). I hustled my ass off for the next year by working connections, getting profs to make calls, and interning for a judge. I focused on judges who were hiring late on OSCAR. Fast forward to like May 2010, I managed to line up two federal clerkships (at good courts).

So there is hope for you guys. You just gotta hustle. Good luck.

I didn't either. In fact I thought it was safer than biglaw (smaller class sizes, no layoffs). I was wrong.

No-offer 2010.

Almost nothing popped up 3L. Interviewing with several biglaw firms now, working great non-legal job in the meantime. I really regret spending 3L in a worried trance, just go with the flow. Things will work out as long as you have the right references and top grades or a good undergrad.

As the poster above said, keep hustling.

What type of non-legal job are you working? How'd you get it?

Where did you find these postings?

What did you do with the legal background? Just tell them that it was a mistake?

im talking about c/o 2009 and c/o 2010.

the fact that they gave a teeny tiny c/o 2011 class full offers means nothing. and read up on ATL.

Oh, graduating class, you mean? I am more focused on offer rates of people who summered this summer (2010) and are graduating in 2011. Any thoughts on that?

Oh, OK. Well, I mean, the fact that those firms did what they did was a product of the time, and I am aware my firms did that in 2009. I also have a market-paying non-ranked NYC firm offer I am considering, too. IDK what they did in 2009.

At least you are enjoying your new work, though (in all seriousness).

How do you know who are those important partners? Is there a list once you get to the firm?

just look at the (a) hiring partners and (b) executive committee members. if you want to be safe, you want to make sure that one of them will be willing to vouch for you above and beyond doing great work for a specific group.

that is usually a total of like 7 people.

because i didn't get the interview through OCI, the interview i did would be the only one i do - regardless of if i get an offer or not. it was a few hours long with different sessions with partners and associates.
