New firm’s whole pitch was “yes you’re taking a step down in pay and prestige and level of work but we go to trial all the time and you’ll get so much more responsibility.”

I got here and they were right about the shit pay and types of cases they get, but guess what they were wrong about: I have the same role in cases as I had at biglaw, and I go to court LESS than I did in biglaw. Also, the work this place puts out is utter fucking trash, and people act like I’m nuts when I’m like “hey we should fucking spell check and read these cases we cite, which actually don’t help us.”

Firm would probably take me back but I don’t want to float that until I’m 100% sure. I moved across the country for this “opportunity” so moving back will be a huge pain.

So far better. Biglaw was odd. Sometimes I was grinding. I had some 2200-2500 years and I had some 2000-2100 years. This’ll be like 2100 at my current pace.

It’s been healthcare false claims act for my whole career. This is more small city general litigation.

Can you just go back without any firm commitment to stay? That’s sometimes a decent option.

Why would that be credited? Best to bounce around fewer rather than more often at firms before you locate your true career opportunity (hopefully not at a firm at all).

if you do this it has to happen FAST otherwise you'll look like someone who just hops firms every 2 years after people realize you're incompetent.

going back to the old firm is awkward and everyone is going to put you under a microscope. you'll end up anxious and paranoid and inevitably will fuck something up and get blamed.

a new firm will just be a normal lateral move, which usually works out fine.

Lateral moves often don’t work out. Being a known quantity somewhere can help.

Well my second firm was dewey so we all know how that worked out.

And when they were all jumping ship and negotiating moves, they told me I couldn’t come with the group because I was a lateral.

Lol when I think back and realize that was a blessing in disguise.

You got lucky because the firm actually blew up. There are lots of less fortuitous ways for lateral moves to go wrong.
