Internal memo from my firm lists schools and their GPA cutoffs. Only 25 schools are listed. The top 14, plus some local schools, and a few random schools (I guess we have partners from those schools). The cutoffs for the top 6 (plus a couple other schools) are the most generous.

Bullshit. So a NYC firm would consider some local toilets, magically stop at T14 and not consider students from UCLA, Texas, USC, U Minn, etc.

Crock of shit.

Did you read my post? There's a total of 25 schools on the list. This is more than just the top 14 and some toilets. As for schools on the list, it just likely means they don't get many applications from those schools, not that they wouldn't take them.

At the Vault 50 (mostly NYC-based), it appears they'd rather have a UCLA student than a Fordham student...but they'd rather have a Fordham student than a UMinn student.

True in the sense that probably not many more people are making market at Georgetown than at UCLA. But false if you're talking about the portability of the degree (very important to some people).

True, the difference between GULC and UCLA market rate jobs probably isn't that much. But there's a huge difference between GULC and GMU, which is 37th.

Correct, just like there is a huge difference between Chicago and Georgetown for market rate jobs that's in line with the differences in quality. It's about the portability and the layman prestige.

edit: I see your point, which is go to the best school in the market you want to practice in if you're not going to Columbia or something. I don't know where the cutoff is for this, but that might be the best way to determine the truly elite schools (you'd be better of leaving your market to get your law degree than going to the best school in it). In this sense, if you're from Cali, Columbia is elite while GULC is not (Columbia>UCLA>GULC for the market).
