There's talk going on that a Kent Scholar and pretty good writer didn't make law review because a staff member had fought with him and kept him off. Thoughts? Confirmation? Is this kosher? Common?

Doubtful this is Christian Troy. CT is not a Kent Scholar, and, if he was, he would probably back his rumor up with something more than "there's talk going on."
This thread is void of detail and substance, but it has a great headline.

Well then what is it? Who is the Kent Scholar? How could anyone rig LR admissions? Who is disgrutled editor? Is the only evidence that someone who people thought would make LR, actually did not make it? Doesn't this happen every year at every school?
This would be a hot story to discuss, but now there is no story.

There is almost certainly truth to this.
The LR says admission is anonymous. But if that were truly the case, then there would be no reason to have a selection meeting at all (with the possible exception of diversity slots). Just grade the submissions, throw the scores into a computer, and have it spit out 35 names.
The very fact the committee meets destroys all anonymity, and the fact they _choose_ to meet means they must intend to look at actual names and make decisions based on that.

I considered not responding to this silly argument, but I guess I will spell it out because I am bored.
Your argument is that there is a selection group that chooses to meet, therefore there is some truth to a Kent scholar being passed over due to some person's personal vendetta? There are many links to the chain that are missing here.
And of course they meet! That's what committees do--they meet! This is how they divide up the call list and tell the callers what to say/what questions to ask/what ansers to have for the new editors. They also likely make decisions on the seven personal statement/diversity slots. The fact that they meet is not surprising or indicative of a conspiracy. I have no info on what goes on at all, but I would guess they take the anonymous element of the selection process very seriously. But since I have no knowledge of it, your guess is as good as mine.
I love conspiracy theories, and I would be entertained if I had a few to read, but the good theories have shreds of evidence and hints of plausibility.

Good points.
Let me soften the arugment
Obviously there are missing links; I wasn't there. Let's just say that the meeting ensures that there is a time at which point the applicants aren't anonymous. What the committee does at that point is anyone's guess.
(compare it to "anonymous grading" -- this is a farce, because profs see the names before they enter the grades, and can adjust for "class participation" (read: how much they like someone)).
But having sat in on committees selecting people for some "exclusive group" before (as I'm sure you have), it's impossible not to let emotions and other personal criteria affect what is supposed to be an objective process. We are human beings, and that's life.
There's no reason why a law review committee would be somehow more pure and ethical than any other group on the planet. Smarter maybe, but less human? I don't think so.
The plausibility you require is there. I'll admit to having no evidence.
But then again, it's fun to speculate.

Well I respect the fact that you are not talking past me and you softened your argument.
I agree that human fallibility and bias might taint the selection of the seven diversity spots. I doubt this rises to the level of being a real problem.
I do not know anyone on law review, although I will be on it next year, so my conjectures about the process and the participants are backed up with only self-reflection. Personally, I take myself way too seriously, and I'll bet many people on LR/in law school are the same way. I think this would cause me to try hard to preserve the purity/integrity of the selection process that selected me. So I am inclined to have faith in a process that purports to be anonymous.
All this is not to say that I would not love to hear some real dirt about the process if it exists.

I think nice is more of a default.
Anonymity begets rudeness; probably because rudeness is funny/normally less available.
But yeah, there are certainly some battle lines drawn up based on school here, which makes sense too.

I thought the grading was blind.
For what it's worth, I actually fought a little with an editor last year (although we did apologize and there seemed to be no hard feelings), and I made it.

Ha. That's just bitterness. The EIC is the only one who could rig law review admissions, and that is very, very unlikely.

Market Pay?
Most firms $135 + an automatic $5 bonus. So $140K.
With the signing bonus, graduation bonus, moving expenses, bar fees, and parking, first years get about $155K, which is equivalent to $1 billion in NYC (ok, not really).

Yeah it's a lot. I'm buying a new car and living in a SWeet apartment my first year! Even while paying my loan I should be able to save $20k/year (to invest in crap).
I can't complain. Oh, and associates bill an average of 1950 hours/year.

Dude, I hear you. Which is why I hereby announce my intention to run for stundent body president this coming fall. Number one on my agenda is bringing vending machines into Jerome Green. Number two, however, is bringing greater transparency and accountability into the Law Review selection process. My first proposal is to do away with the take-home writing competition. There is just too much room for dishonest aspiring law students to cheat and break the honor code and collaborate with their roomates and Lexis-Nexis. Instead, the writing comp should be conducted in class, taking advantage of SofTest and the eagle eyes of our distinguished procturing community. In addition, I propose the introduciton of a major blue-booking component. This should be worth at least 84% of the overall grade, since 99% of an editor's duties will be checking that citations are in proper blue book form. Finally, because grading has been such a major problem in the past, I propose that each reader prepare a 20 page account of their justifications for their rankings and that the final order be published for the community at large, with official mechanisms in place for students to challenge the outcome. If a challenge is succesful, the grader should be immediately stripped of his or her position on the review and his or her employer should be notified at once. To further insure the integrity of the process, current Law Review students shall be forbidden from fraternizing with incoming 1Ls. This includes preventing them from serving as TAs for foundation courses and possibly sequestering them in Little Warren for their tenure on the journal.
If you like what you hear, be sure to cast a ballot this Fall for CLStumper for student boby president.
