These faggots start edging to the front of their seats as the professor begins to wind down their lecture. As soon as the prof finishes, they LEAP OUT of their fucking chairs and SPRINT to the PODIUM as fast as they can. Then they ask the prof a rehearsed question designed to make themselves appear intelligent OR alternatively tell a FUCKING STUPID anecdote about how THE LAW in this particular class has crawled into their daily lives.

So PATHETIC. DIE PODIUM SPRINTER. DIE.

my property professor did not allow students to ask questions-- ever. if you incorporated a question of your own into a response, he would shout: "I ask the questions!" one time I made the mistake of emailing him a question-- he told me to figure out the answer myself.

Podium sprinters may hail from institutions where fraternizing with the profs (ostensibly for purely intellectual gains, after class) is condoned behavior and rewarded or reflected in the GPA of students willing to learn the turns of the fraternization dance. Some schools actually foster this kind of behavior in the thinking that a student's opinion or his analysis on a topic being taught shoud be of no interest whatever to his prof until the student is, at least, a third year post-grad; and his job until then is to subjugate his impuses, which he may have to represent his experience or knowledge; and to focus instead on passively listening and adding new knowledge, in as great a volume and, as quickly and effectively as possible.

90% of the time it's a question having to do with logistics of the class or wondering about a certain due date for something or something of that nature. once in a while i might have a brief question i want clarified. once in a blue moon i have a more detailed question i want to ask that i dont want to bore the rest of the class with.

The large majority of professors prefer to answer questions in person rather than by email. You can tell which ones don't -- they leave as soon as class is over, explaining that they have another commitment to attend to.

No, the large majority of professors prefer to answer questions via email or during office hours, which is why they say "come to my office hours/send me an email if you have a question" as opposed to "feel free to waste my time immediately after class if you have any questions," and you can tell which ones hate you -- they leave as soon as class is over, explaining that they have another commitment to attend.

usually something from the reading that caught my interest or related to something in another class or something, but that the prof didn't get to. I'd rather ask a question immediately because because I would probably forget it otherwise and thus not email the professor.

That's correct. LS is a means to an end. IT IS NOT FUCKING INTERESTING. I REPEAT. IT IS NOT FUCKING INTERESTING. It is not an intellectual exercise. Lawyers are plumbers who amass a tool box of skills. We are not intelligencia.

i go up to the podium once in a while. i don't think it's the worst behavior, unless, as the OP mentioned, you're sprinting to it.

the worst podium people ask way too many policy questions in class, and then continue their policy banter after it, as if the prof really cares about how res ipsa and information forcing shouldn't apply to 19 defendants in Wolf or Ybarra.

here are two of the worst questions that i recall from podium people:

"So why can't cats count as strict liability? What if they scratch a person once? Is that like the one bite rule?"

"So why doesn't the dissent allow a possessory interest in (insert kidney transfer nonsense/inalienability here)?"(actually, anything about Moore v. Regents. That case is the worst for attracting dumb questions.)

In my class the abortion discussion was very stilted because no one really felt comfortable. The prof even mentioned that we were unusually reticent, for which I thanked Jesus because I did NOT care to hear what everybody thought on that particular subject.

i'm kinda excluding ConLaw because that seems like a given for inciting banal discussion.

Moore is definitely terrible. i would be a very happy law student if i never had to discuss the following cases again:

Moore v. Regents

Tarasoff

Indiana Harbor Belt v. American Cyanamid Co.

Campbell v. Acuff Rose

Mount Laurel I and II (exclusionary zoning)

Regina v. Dudley and Stephens (this one is particularly terrible if you have some philosophy strivers in your class)

Campbell is the big copyright case with "Pretty Woman" and 2 Live Crew. Souter wrote it. basically, if it's a parody designed for a different market, then it doesn't infringe copyright.

Regina is the cannibalism/necessity case for Crim. it's fairly useless on the exam, but profs like to use it for retributive/utilitarian arguments.

Mount Laurel is the Jersey case with exclusionary zoning. the city zoned in a way that excluded low rent housing, therefore keeping the city racially segregated.

Tarasoff is the case with the psychologist and the duty to warn.

Indiana Harbor is the strict liability case in which there was toxic leakage in a suburban area.

i won't dwell on why these cases encourage bad discussion, but just look at the topics: zoning and segregation, incompatible industrial uses, psychologists and the right to privacy, and retributive/utilitarian punishment arguments.

This.

The only time I talked to a prof was when I ran into my conlaw prof at the grocery store once.

He was one of those conlaw profs that took delight in confusing people and freaking out gunners. 80% of the class had no clue what he was talking about.

He asked me how his lectures were going and whether we were getting it.

I told him everything was cool, bought a case of beer and a frozen pizza, and went on my way.

Podium sprinters are harmless because by the time they are doing their thing I am out the door and it's only the prof's time they are wasting.

The really annoying gunners are ones who ask stupid questions in class. Those gunners actually waste everyone's time, not just the prof's.

Equally annoying are the striver douches who raise their hand the entire class in order to give their opinion on something, just so they can let the class know how they feel.

This dood in one of my classes probably raises his hand on average every 2-3 minutes, just to say 'I noticed that...' or 'I really think Judge OldDouche is attempting to...'

Those fuckers drive me crazy, and there's always at least one of them every semester.

Right - so the advice to the 1L's is, don't ask professors questions after class, but it's also douchey to email them or see them during office hours, or ask questions during class, or ever display, at any point, to anyone, the slightest sign that you are interested in the material or do not completely understand 100% of the law.

This thread is like the threads that explain why YLS is a TTT because all the students are head-in-the clouds idiots, HLS is a TTT because it's a diploma mill, and every other school is a TTT because it's not Y/H.
