ur fucked.
For people who worked hard enough or got lucky enough to get your foot in the door right out of college, there are plenty of openings. Companies want to hire educated young people with 5-6 years of experience who they can pay less than shit boomers or Gen X assholes like me.
But you got to have that experience. I've been hanging out with 26-28 year olds lately and for the two of them who got jobs out of college, they are getting recruited heavily within their fields to low six figure jobs.
For those who took a year to travel, or went to "grad school" or lived at home, they are still trying different grad programs or living at home or paying full ride at Whittier Law. These are not HSYP graduates, but still.
It's like a whole subgeneration is fucked, but for the select few who made it, there is little competition.

The girl I am dating is 27 and is a comptroller at a manufacturing company. She gets calls from accounting firms all the time.
Her friend is 27 and works for Northrop in El Segundo doing some engineer shit.
The other 10 of their friends are doing nothing, getting their 3rd masters, or are working admin or HR for $30K 6 years out of college.

So accounting and engineering are in demand. More news at 11.
My friend is 30, graduated from middling regional school with median grades, has 7 years experience and found a new accounting job at 90k within a week.
But people who are 27 and up got jobs before ITE. Show me 25 year olds in demand. Hint. Few got good jobs out of college.

Here are a few of the harsh truths.
1. College is a time for hustling. Too many people show up at 18, fool around with majors, maybe take 5 years, maybe dabble in a minor, then at 22 or 23 look around and realize they have to get a job. Get your AP/CLEP/whatever credits, stick to your major, forget the traps of minors or soft majors, maybe finish in 3.5. If you want to do your international travel, I guess, but recognize you're probably paying a load of money for essentially a worthless long-term experience.
2. Employers don't want to pay for training anymore. Your summer jobs might be unpaid. But it's better for you to intern unpaid at IBM than make $8/hour at Sonic waiting tables. Your summers and externships are your chances for getting a career when you graduate. They are not primarily about making money.
3. Do not follow "your dream" as your Boomer parents have instructed you. You stopped dreaming of being an astronaut or a police man or a fireman long ago. Now is a time for some reality.

Greetings,
If you're white, study abroad in Asia. For the rest of your 20s you will have important people marveling at what must be your sheer brilliance at mastering CJK. This is the type of person you want to talk to, and they will talk to you at social events with this background.
Same goes for people who do math or physics as major. People will instantly assume you're a genius, and they'll want to talk to you.
So double major in, say, Mandarin and Theoretical Physics. You're set for life.

To be fair,
So your "advice" here is
(1) Just go to a Top 20 undergrad; and
(2) Just graduate Top 10 % of your class there (preferably in a "real", i.e., difficult, major)
Oh OK bro, damn if only everyone would follow this ARE generation would be set!
Fucking idiot.

Luckily, most people aren't meant to be high earners with high-powered jobs. Most are average, most will go on to make a middle class income, and I think the attitude that the job market has few openings but for the best is overly sensitive. Top fields always require top students and strivers, and the squeeze on that is natural, given the way many employees have extended their stay in the workplace.
Strivers working even harder doesn't bug me and it doesn't make me feel like reality is a bitch. Strivers MAF, though. Poor kids are going to run themselves ragged.

Most liberal arts degrees don't have a clear-cut career path attached to them so I feel like that group is always going to be most likely to seek post-grad and/or least financially rewarding jobs hoping their skill within an organization will mobilize them over an expected long period of time.
You seem to think that every company is a top company. Will a middling finance major get a job at Boston Consulting Group? No. Could he get a job as an entry level analyst at a local bank? Sure. Obviously there are pressures that do make it more difficult to find a job, but Earl's example of the only people actually getting relevant jobs out of college being the ones in the three figure range is just totally overblown.
VERY FEW people will EVER make that kind of money. I don't see why it's a huge deal.

I somewhat disagree with this but it's mostly on point
the thing is, grad school is fine for certain things--e.g. if you go back for physics, chemistry, geology, certain areas in biology. but clearly if you're just a sociology student from uc davis you're kind of fucked
the nice thing about STEM, even "soft" degrees, is you can almost always default to some form of employable grad school or teaching HS. even post-ITE where teaching positions are scarce schools are still desperate for someone to teach math/science. literally almost all the people I can think of who became teachers are humanities/social science
basically, merely choosing the right major can make up for some degree of slacking off. of course you won't make 100k as soon as others but it really doesn't bother most people

To be fair,
There are also plenty of jobs out there picking crops and working the fry machine at Micky D's, and yet we still have near double digit unemployment in this country.
IT IS A MYSYERY
