hint - you don't get extra to cover what happens to your savings when you convert them back to dollars after you come back.

lol at your international lawyering fantasies though - you'll be running through piccadilly in smashing burberry raincoat on your way to a GLAMOROUS law meeting with a bunch of euro ballers in no time.

I think you're bitter about something....the top firms pay a COLA (cost of living adjustment) to make up for the difference in living expenses, so you actually make more dollars then you do in New York - what you do with them is up to you. Plus, they get you a plush furnished apartment in London for your 2L summer and pay for your plane tickets there. Show me an NY firm that does that...

Don't you have to pay ridiculously high UK taxes on top of the US taxes on the income over $80K?

if you're smart and you travel for work a lot, you can get really goood UK tax breaks. between that and the COLA, most London associates net about what NYC ones do, if not, occasionally more.

COLAs paid in US have been adjusted so the associates didn't get a windfall in pounds when the dollar tanked, but overall, it's still about the same comp package as before the rate change. most firms now pay 160 base plus between 45-75 COLA for first years. they're still at least as well off as nyc associates. things will change next year, though, because they're supposed to be increasing the uk tax rate to something like 50%.

are they still uncompetitive ITE? or median from t14 is no longer sufficient?

yes, magic circle firms. They were and will be extremely competitive - however, class rank is not what will get you hired - they're looking for someone who's going to be an asset in London and internationally (there is more emphasis on personality, i.e. being able to communicate with different kinds of people, and foreign language helps A LOT). Being median at T14 will not disqualify you from getting hired, if that's what you're asking.

i'm interested, but i'm not certain i have much more to bring to the table than a good personality (good grades at lower t14).

chances of getting hired w/o fluency in another language? any other advice to stand out?
