You know, compared to all those "lifestyle" firms in DC that pay market.

Hey man, do you know what top 1/3 is at UVA? I think I'm around the cutoff but I'm not 100% sure what it is.

The only numbers they announce are the top 25 cutoff (law review) and the top 1/4 (3.48, according to career services transcripts).

Shit. So if I'm >3.4, I can't claim top 1/3? I figured they'd at least announce the top 1/3 cutoff for the "Virginia (aka BS Diversity) Plan" law review option.

Since I'm not high enough for top 1/4, it would be great to be able to claim top 1/3 instead of just "above the median"

They only announce the top 25 cutoff because you can qualify in later years with the cutoff GPA from your 1L year (i.e., if the cutoff is 3.756, and you finish 2L year with a 3.757, you can become a LR member for 3L year). Otherwise they wouldn't even do that.

career services used to have the avg gpa of students selected to interview at ogi for each firm. in the past, it said that 3.402 was "'top third" and 3.22 was "lower third."

btw, to the supposed bad-ass ccn dude who couldn't get an interview at cov, the avg gpa for selectees was 3.5 -- barely top quarter.

It wouldn't be that hard to estimate one's percentile based on GPA. All you'd need is a TI-83 and five minutes with the normalcdf() function.

Plug in the school median and keep changing the standard deviation so that normalcdf(3.48, 1e99, median, std. dev) = .25 or close to it.

Then once you've got the standard deviation figured out, punch in normalcdf(Your GPA, 1e99, median, std. dev.) and the number that comes out is your percentile rank.

Can you get any D.C. firms with Top 1/3 ITE? Should be a lock for NYC, though, right?

No way in hell you can get Jones Day. Sorry, but I'm a CA2/7/9/DC clerk who graduated top 1-3% from CCN (also on LR), and I couldn't get an offer from them (or Covington, Wilmer, or anyone else in DC).

Edit: To be completely accurate, I should note that I only applied to the top 10 or so DC firms. I don't know if, say, Steptoe is hiring. But I don't think you'd even get an interview at the top 10 firms unless you have connections.

Edit 2: And don't work at Jones Day. It is, as the say in France, "le crappe."

Are you talking about this year? As in post-clerkship hiring this year? I find it pretty hard to believe. Wilmer, in particular, sent me a letter saying they weren't hiring at all (I got similar letters from Mayer Brown and others). Are you sure you're not talking about 2L hiring, which was done in the fall before things looked quite so bad?
