I go to UVA and I can say that outside of VA, this isn't true. Very few northeasterners are aware of UVA's rank as a public university.

It's certainly not "pretty much known as the best public." The vast majority of northeasterners would probably rank Berkeley and Michigan at the top, with UVA a distant third (that is, fairly educated people would rank this way. The general public probably thinks their local TTT is better than UVA).

In the South, outside of VA, people would probably rank their local state flagship 1, Berkeley 2, and UVA 3. This is especially true in NC, where I've heard people talk about UNC like it's fucking H.

As an aside, a disgusting number of people think NYU is top public university.

UNC is comparable to UVA, and many, many Northeasterners apply to UNC. Probably many more than apply to Cal Berkeley. People think it's all sunshine basketball and hot women, with a decent education thrown in.

"UNC is comparable to UVA, and many, many Northeasterners apply to UNC. Probably many more than apply to Cal Berkeley. People think it's all sunshine basketball and hot women, with a decent education thrown in."

I'm not sure what your point is here. You say UNC is comparable to UVA, which is true enough (although not in LS), but in the particular respect you describe, (i.e., northeastern admissions/overall awareness of UNC in the northeast due largely to sportsl and weather) the two schools are not at all similar. The reason for the larger number of admissions has everything to do with the three reasons you described and nothing to do with any sort of UNC layman's prestige in the northeast, unless you consider those three things factoring in to layman's prestige. Even if you do, just because you say UNC is comparable to UVA doesn't make it so, esp. in the eyes of the average, or even educated, northeasterner.

In my high school, UNC was the school that was "hip" to apply to, as a top state school but also a kickass time. You're right that UVA does not really have the sports/weather factors that attract to UNC, and UVA was thought of as pretty elite, Ivy-level, and really tough to get into. In my high school UNC, UVA and Mich all seemed to have higher "prestige" than a place like Berkeley, maybe somewhat because it was a pretty Republican town. I can say UNC had very high lay prestige in the Mid Atlantic area I grew up in.

"UVA was thought of as pretty elite, Ivy-level, and really tough to get into."

This was not at all the perception at my high school. The fact is no one outside of the top 5-10% at 99% of high schools even has these schools on their radar, so their lay prestige is not high.

There were certainly people at my HS, myself included, who considered UVA but no one considered it on par with Ivies. By mid atlantic do you mean Maryland or Va? Because those are the only places where I've encountered people who think UVA is at that level.

I won't quibble with where Berkeley is in terms of layman's prestige in the northeast, although I still think Mich and Berkeley, and probably UNC for that matter, are higher on the average person's list than UVA (the latter more for basketball than anything else). My point wasn't that UNC sucked, or that Berkeley was the shit, just that most northerners don't see much difference between UVA and your average southern state school.

Even if your HS experience was typical (and I don't think it is) the fact that the upper crust at your high school (i.e. the people applying to Ivies and elite publics, esp. those two publics who admit relatively few out-of-staters and therefore have really high admissions stats) knew the relative strengths of UVA and UNC tells us nothing about the schools' prestige among the overall population, or even among the relatively educated part of the population, many of whom felt privileged to go to Penn State, Binghamton, or UMass.

What does laymen even mean though? If you mean the random guy on the street, most of the time he won't be an academic and maybe half the time he'll be into college sports. That should determine laymen prestige unless you're talking about HYSPM. Otherwise the vast majority of laymen don't know what a Columbia is.

This board is the only one that creates these hierachy lists and the silly idea of Little/Medium/Huge gaps between schools of the same caliber.

And everyone knows Columbia, for goodness sakes.

Well, maybe everyone where you're from knows Columbia, but in 20 years I never heard a peep about Columbia nor did I meet anyone that knew what it was (besides my doctors).

I'm not saying it's a bad thing obviously. The same went for my undergrad and law school: everyone I told kinda smiled but you could tell they had no idea what they were, and the only people that were genuinely impressed where doctors/lawyers.

I guess it doesn't matter so long as the profession knows Columbia. And they do, even in foreign countries.

But laypeople would have heard of Columbia before they would have heard of Berkeley or Michigan.

I mean, whatever makes you sleep at night, but I gotta say that I remember seeing a lot of Berkeley shirts even in my shitty public high school out in the country and people were pretty well aware of Michigan because of its football.

Columbia's a great school. It's just not very well known. When I told a bunch of my family that I was thinking of applying, I remember them asking if it was in Missouri.

Columbia has both the Ivy League and NYC connection plugs going for it. It has nothing to do with me sleeping at night.

Maybe what it is as well is that you come from the country, but in the highly populated regions everyone's heard of Columbia. Berkeley has that funky 60s radicalism connection going for it, but that is not going to last forever. Columbia will always be Ivy League, and it will always be the school that college aged people who want NYC will vie to get into.

Nobody knows where the ivy schools are located except HYP and maybe Cornell.

Everyone knows Berkeley. Whether they realize that Berkeley is UCAL is a different matter.

on the west coast, it's berkeley / columbia > all the others, which just sound like regular state schools to lay people.

Football doesn't correlate well with lay prestige.

Berkeley (people think "science" or "smart hippies")

Chicago (people think "physics" or "economics")

Columbia (people think "Ivy League" or "South America")

NYU (people think "elite film school")

Penn (people either think "state school" or "Ivy League")

Mich (people think "state school" and "football")

UVa (people think "state school I haven't heard of")

from my own experiences, Chi has more cachet in the East Coast, especially among the upper middle-class. many of them were either impressed or feigned it.

in the Midwest, few people were impressed, but they wouldn't vocalize their feelings as readily even if they were. the culture doesn't value degrees in the same way, because they weren't hewn out of SAT competition among 16-year-old gunners during Hebrew camps. degrees in the Midwest are the product of following high school friends to state schools. therefore, the attitude could not be more different.

Really when it comes down to it, there aren't many schools that command lay prestige because most people just don't get a shit about college like people in college/on this board/going to college do.

Coming from a family where no one had gone to college, the only college names I'd ever heard in my lifetime before I started looking at colleges myself were Harvard, Yale, Stanford, MIT, Princeton, Duke, Georgetown, Brown, Berkeley, UCLA, UT (and a couple more of my state's better public schools), Rice.

And maybe that's just my experience, but considering I come from the "lay people" (as in people who in general don't know or give a shit about college), I'd say my experience is pretty representative. Maybe change things up a little depending on which part of the country you're from, but I think that just means that you could subtract the Texas schools which aren't really that national in prestige from my list.

And once you get past these few really national schools, all that's left is sports.

To be fairskinned like 90's MJ,

True.

The bad news, of course, is that when you can't find a job after graduation everyone thinks the problem is with you and assumes you must be a huge, toolish dumbass to graduate from THE SAME SCHOOL TAHT BILL CLINTON WNENT TO* and not find employment afterwards.

*but not really.

Columbia (obv)

Berkeley (lots of scientific prestige)

Michigan (football lay prestige)

UVA (default middle)

Penn (Penn State prestige)

U Chicago (a few people are familiar, but pretty state-school sounding)

NYU (too state-school sounding)

as an east coaster:

Columbia (Ivy, NYC, elite UG and top grad programs pretty much across the board).

Penn (Ivy, Wharton)

Berkeley (top public school in the country, elite grad programs)

Chicago (intellectual atmosphere)

NYU (Tisch arts, Stern, Greewich Village, general popularity among HS kids)

Michigan/UVA (nobody cares)

Tons of East Coast, NYC/Philly area kids apply to and think of Michigan as quasi-Ivy. Certainly better than NYU, or U Chicago (which they haven't even heard of)

It's the backup to the Ivies for NY/NJ/Philly Jews. But I was applying when their bball and football were both very good, so it might be different now. not too long ago Michigan was the shit. Of course this was also before their state hit the skids.
