Subject: DOJ Tax: How prestigious?

We all know DOJ is prestigious. But where does the Tax division rank in the DOJ prestige hierarchy? Near the top or near the bottom?

They're harder to get into because there are fewer openings due to more people wanting to stay in an easy practice area and more people wanting to go into it in the first place. You have to be objectively smarter to do the work in the tax group. Therefore, it is more prestigious.

I think federal civil lit experience of any kind is what they're looking for, but the closer you can get to something antitrust-related the better, I'm sure. After that, they look at school and what firm you're coming from. Not sure beyond that. No way to get in sooner right now.

relevant experience is very important. however, a lot of what antitrust does is not actual antitrust law. for example, the entire criminal side of ATR (field offices and natl crim enforcement) are basically run of the mill white collar prosecutors. most of the cases they do have gone so beyond the bounds of antitrust law that theyre straight up fraud/theft/bribery/kickback/bid-rigging cases. For example, ATR is leading the bribery/kickback investigation into military contracting in Iraq.
