I want to quit but I'm too pussy to do so without another job and I can't find any other job. I'm just a wuss ass.

I go into work every day wondering wtf I'm doing. My first year or so it was actually somewhat interesting because I liked my practice area and had to learn so much since law school is useless.

Now it's just repetitive bullshit over and over. Draft an answer. Answer discovery. Argue over one bullshit document. Write summary judgment motions on the same fucking issues. Prepare all sorts of pre-trial paperwork only to have the case fucking settle two days before trial.

I work for asshole partners who are nice (because they have to be politically correct these days) but who are also anal and only care about money. I swear I've never meet a rainmaker who wasn't just a money hungry beast and/or a socially retarded fucktard who had to justify their existence by billing 3,000 hours a year.

I've saved over 225k so if I wanted to I could easily run away for a year or two somewhere and volunteer. If I was a man I'd do it but I'm just a BIGLAW tool now working for the paycheck. I'm just a troll like all the other BIGLAW associates. The only way I'd ever leave is if I get fired/laid off or if it became so fucking unbearable that partners were yelling at me eight hours a day. Neither is likely to happen so I'll probably be a BIGLAW troll for a long time.

At least I enjoy looking at my net worth statement on Yodlee every fucking day. That is the only redeeming thing about my fucking job.

We all have exist plans. I think of shit all the time. I apply to federal government lawyer jobs everyday. I think of volunteering in Asia. I think of trying to become an FBI agent or State Dept foreign service. I'd love to just cuss out a partner and go travel the world for a year.

But you know what it's easier said than done. It is hard to walk away from a high paying job unless it is totally abusive even if you find it boring and mind numbing and can't imagine doing it for life.

You have enough cash to spend a few years figuring shit out. Start a firm. Start a business. Buy a camera and travel the world. Write a novel. Go out west and bum around. Shit, I can think of a million things I would do if I was in your situation. You only live once, dood. Stop being a pussy and go live your life instead of wasting it in an office sitting on a pile of cash.

I've already traveled a ton abroad and I've lived abroad. I'd love to do it again but it doesn't ahve the appeal it does to someone who hasn't done it before.

Same iwth living in different US cities. I've lived in NYC, LA, etc. Done that all.

If I'm going to do something I want to do something cool and unusual and different that will really change my perspective of the world. I don't know what.

Greetings,

Just do GC of a startup, bro. I can vouch for it being extremely rewarding.

If Jobs had died before I was doing this, I would have been depressed about not having a job where I make stuff and contribute to society. But being GC of a tech startup, I get to participate actively in improving the world one electron at a time. OR some faggo tshit like that.

this is the first and hardest problem with nouveau riche -- u just don't have the consumption habits formed yet that keep ur nose to the grindstone, and all this pointless, asinine self-reflection at bay. poors have it easy here, b/c they can struggle and scrape just to get an extra tub of fried chicken on friday night or tickets to the monster truck show. so they can live paycheck to paycheck without hardly lifting a bloated, diabetic finger.

the key here is that u have to learn to live beyond the TTT middle-class striver life in which u were raised, and re-learn how to steadily accumulate shit that you don't need but that u can still not really afford on ur current income. this is a problem for u, b/c things that ppl who are actually wealthy consider necessary seem like "luxuries" to u, and not needed for existence or happiness. once u get over this mental block, things will go much smoother for u, and ur life will make much more sense. u will also be happy, b/c u will lose all this excess leisure time that winds up being spent "examining" and basically just agonizing over everything that ur life is not, rather than blissfully appreciating the meager and fleeting bits of goodness that it is.

to start with, u need to sink ur savings into a down-payment on some hideously overpriced luxury condo in a major metro (or a ridic house in the burbs if ur in some dogshit southern state). next, get a lease on a car that costs at least $80k, and get a massive -- like at least $20k -- wardrobe makeover. also, make sure ur next vacation will run u $20k minimum. and start having some motherfucking fun in ur precious few off hours (if u can't figure out how to do this, then just hook up with a model or two -- they'll help u burn through cash and live on the edge with NO fucking problem). acquiring a manageable but expensive drug habit will also help here. weed is too cheap. cocaine is ok. stay away from heroin though -- just trust me on that one.

once u have done this, u will have two things: (1) tangible, shiny, material things and decadent chemical pleasures that will make ur "meaningless" work something of real presence and value in ur life; and (2) the start of an endless incentive to work ur ass off and rise to the top of the troll heap in ur firm. when ur mind becomes consumed with making more money b/c u need it just to make ends meet, u will be AMAZED how u no longer give a shit what the work is -- just a long as it gets u paid. and when u get used to living like u own the place, then u will find a lot more ambition to do whatever it takes to ensure that u actually do someday.

Any interest in starting your own firm?

Any interest in starting a non-legal business, if so, what kind?

Any outstanding debt?

It is not that hard to make partner at my firm compared to ther places but you start as a non-equity partner of course and you don't make all that much and it's only worth it if you can eventually bring in business to make equity. Otherwise ytou are just a glorified senior associate who likely will get pushed out after a few years unless you kiss major ass.

I don't own a home. That is the best decision I ever made- not buying a condo two years ago at the peak of the market. I'd have lost 100k in a year.

I think about starting my own firm and doing plaintiffs side work but that's easier said than done. I'd start with no clients. I don't know how to get clients really. I'd love to steal some clients from my firm and bill them hourly doing defense side work but I'm not in a position to do it. And if I start my own firm I need to get fired from my current firm so I can collect unemployment for a year since I probably wouldn't make anything for several months as a solo.

I'd never start a non-legal business. This is all I've ever done. I wouldnt' mind owning a bar but no idae how to make money doing that.

I have 60k left of student loans at 1.5% interest. I pay about 300 a month.

I consolidated in 2005. All my loans were federal. My rate then was 2.5%. After making 36 straight ontime payments it was lowed a percent to 1.5%.

In 2006 or something Bush raised interest rates (made them fixed) and everyone got fucked. I got really lucky.

Well I see your point. If I had put 60k in a long term CD about two years ago paying 5.5% then I'd have made enough each year to pay most of my loan payments.

But now rates suck and I could only get 2% which won't cover everything. But I see your point.

Trust me, I was the most money hungry greedy bastard when I finished LS. I just wanted to make money. That was the sole reason I went to LS. But after a few years in BIGLAW you realize that you can't work solely for money. You have to be a tool, hypercompetitive or socially retarded to stay in BIGLAW for life. That is just a fact. You can't sustain it if you have any other interests in life.

Eventually you wake up everyday realizing you are just working to collect a paycheck adn you have no other motivation.

And when you make BIGLAW money you end up spending it like you wouldn't otherwise. You hang out with other BIGLAW associates. You drop your CC at a bar and pick up the entire tab. You eat at the niciest restaurant. You do stupid shit for chicks. Some months I can't believe how much I've spent on stupid shit, drinking and eating at restaurants. It's just fucking ridiculous. If I was making 90k instead I'd watch my money and not do such stupid shit.

oh shit....i just figured it out - this is one of those "criticize the associates smart enough and cool enough to make partner as socially retarded" threads.

here's a tip - those who succeed in any service field are not socially retarded. they just don't give a fuck about saying good morning or making chit chat with a shit fucking, soon to be pushed out junior associates. the stench of your impending failure is what makes the successful so uncomfortable around you.

JUST JOKING WITH YOU! Of course guys who attract millions in legal work in a hyper competitive market are socially retarded - that has to be it.

so there is a dysfunction but its just greed i guess. but not always expressed as awkwardness. though sometimes is.

I was calculating it the other day. Basically since I started working in late 2005 I've made about 400k POST-tax. So I've saved a little over 50% of that, and spent the rest to live. When you think of it that way is not too hard. I don't understand why other BIGLAW associates don't save as much but I realiz its harder when you have a 2.8k NYC apartment, or a 600 car payment or a 3.5k mortgage in LA, or a wife/GF who you need to blow a ton of money on, or 1.5k a month student loan payments, or if you blow 15k on a European vacation every year.

Aside from the $15k on the European vacation every year, all of those expenses (rent/mortgage, car, loans, girls/partying, vacations) seem pretty reasonable. I know people in NYC who are at your class year who saved about half of what you have saved and they're not overly wasteful spenders. They probably live in the $2800/square foot apartment but don't waste tons of cash on booze, drugs, clothes, trips and girls although they do have fun and splurge every so often.

Job markets are going to be shit until next year, at the least. I don't think anyone revises their job hiring needs that frequently. Just keep your head down, and take the time to pad your savings and try to build your network for when you go job searching in full force next year.

Fuck I have 230k right now today, but I've lost at least 15k in the market so I should be closer to 250k already. Fucking stock market.

No. No job is interesting. All work is involuntary. Even if people liek the work they do they wouldn't work the hours they do.

Point is that BIGLAW is just unsustainable unless you are a fucktard. Honest truth.

I'd rather work for the fed government making 90k to 110k which is what attorneys with four years expereince pull in big cities for the feds.

For the most part you can't be a "normal" functioning human being and make money.

You CAN be a money hungry, toolish, hyper competitive socially retard who makes tons of money in banking or law or business and works so much you never have time to enjoy.

Other than that I'd imagine the only people who enjoy their money who make bank are professional athletes and some musicians, actors, etc. Basically people in the arts.

But for real jobs most people are miserable.

Fortunately in 2005, 2006, and 2007 I didn't max out in my 401k because I thought I was going to buy a condo so I wanted to save for a downpayment. That SAVED me TONS of money because my 401k was all invested in stocks and they all went to shit. I lost over 35% though I've made a fraction back this year.

I only have 35k in my 401k. So now even 20% of my portfolio is in 401k.

My luck was not investing ALL my money in stocks. I only had max 40% probably less. That was key.

Do you think you'd be happier at a small/midlaw firm, or would it have the same "only working for money" kind of feel?

I can see myself having the same reaction to biglaw as you, but I think I'd be a little more OK with the prospect of doing something for the money given that I want to have a family. It's probably easier to think "I'm doing this boring job so my kids can go to college" than it is "I'm doing this boring job so that I can boost my savings from $200K to $300K."

Thread doesn't make much sense. $225K isn't that much, and what will you do when the $ runs out?

You need a couple of bucks for this strategy to make sense.

And while your costs are low right now, at some point, costs will increase (wife and kids). Your most expensive years are well ahead of you.

What pensive would say is that you should spend a year in a Third World country on the cheap, figure out what you want to do with your life, and find a way to move into that career path.

Or, you can stay in New York and spend 2-3 years socializing with the right crowd while working a low-hours, low-stress job that pays at maintenance level. Become well-connected, and make your big move out of those connections.

If you get married and have kids before sorting this shit out, that Biglaw job will become inescapable.

First, don't quit your fucking job just to be a ttt homeless roaming faggot for a few years.

I know several retards who did this, and guess what, after 2 years they all went back to law firms. Different ones, but firms none the less. ITE you can't afford to walk out because the assurance that you will get rehired once you return just is not there.

I'm glad to see you already have traveled so hopefully this TTT impulse is not present in you.

You have two options, both within the current firm: float or rise. Use ITE as an excuse to squeak by with billable hours and use your extra time to make the right connections and interview for jobs. You can easily "figure out what you want to do with your life" while you are collecting your $200K salary. It's just as likely you will figure it out now as it would be if you were drinking and smoking a lot of weed in some Calcutta slum. The second option is gun hard and stand out ITE at your firm. Since you don't appear to have any notable interests anyway, why not dedicate your life to something where you have a chance of success? If nothing else, it will help you in 4 years when you finally figure shit out.

I definitely think you should take the second option and get over your striver malaise.

Do you actually want a wife and children?

Most of the advice here is wrong. You should keep working biglaw and downshift into a 9-5 in-house type job just when you get married and start having children. The biglaw savings will let you take a good bite out of a house, which is the most important thing you'll do in this second third of life. The 9-5 job will support the fam. at middle class level and let you spend time with your children. You'll rise through the hierarchy at the company for fifteen years, not even realizing, when it happens after five or so, that you've passed your biglaw salary by. And through it all you will have a better schedule, perhaps more meaningful work, and you will be able to see your family. You also won't be working among 40-year-old adolescent coke-sniffers, but among other family people.

I don't want a wife and kids really. I can't imagine supporting others when it's so stressful and hard just to survive on my own. Sure I save a lot of money but work blows ass and I have no pressure to stay. Imagine if I had pressure to keep my job in order to pay a mortgage, pay for a bitch wife, save for kids education and all that shit. That would just ruin me.

I'd rather try to survive in BIGLAW or in-house until I'm 35. I'll have saved about 1 million by then.

It depends on what you mean by "trial experience" About three times I've helped a case go to trial by doing most of the pre trial paperwork (motions in limine, helping with the trial brief, jury instructions etc.) However I never actually was in the courtroom since the partner and junior partner/senior associate does that shit.

I've gone to court a lot to do ex parte application "hearings" but those are horseshit. Usually the judge isn't even there, you just talk to his clerk.

A couple times I've actually been able to "argue" something in administrative type hearings.

And so basically I have very little real courtroom experience but I don't care. Litigation isn't about going to trial. 99% of our cases settle or are thrown out before trial. I'd much rather become good at brief writing and taking depositions than cross-examining witnesses.

Very few associates ever get real trial experience.

Who are those "very few" associates? Those who express interest? Those who are good at speaking in court? If I'm really interested in getting courtroom experience, how strongly would you recommend not going to biglaw?

The only ones I know who got trial experience (and by that I mean actually putting on witnesses at trial) work for this one partner who is notorious for giving associates hand-ons work. Other than this one partner, no one in my office would ever in a million years let an associate put on a witness at trial because it is basically malpractice per se.

If you want to be in court, work as a public defender or ADA. No question. No associate in BIGLAW goes to trial and actually does anything other than the pre-trial paperwork and watching the document binders during trial. Friends who have gone to DA's office have done trials within a month of starting. All they do is trials.

That sounds nice. I've been to Bali but not elsewhere in Indonesia. I've always wanted to trek it. It's an interesting country.

I went to Paris in undergrad. The food was nice but Europe isn't my thing. Too expensive. For one week in western Europe you can live like a king in Asia for a month. My nice hotel in Bali cost $20 a night.

And I'd rather fuck Asian girls than hairy cocky French women.

How do you not have exit options? V-range/practice/market? My impression is midlevels are in high demand right now with work picking back up and firms having already made deep cuts during ITE. If you're a 4th year, your phone should be ringing off the hook with recruiter calls. Am I totally misinformed?

Holy shit, can't believe I am reading this shit. I am the OP.

About six months after posting this I finally got fired. I got a nice severance package and left to travel immediately. I had about 325k in net worth.

I'm actually still travelling (it's been over 18 months) and it's been fucking awesome. I've gone to over 30 countries (been to 80 in my life now). I go to developing countries so it is cheap, it costs only about $20k a year for everything. So even after the recent market crash I still have 316k net worth. If the market just picks up a little I should end up paying for two years travelling.

I've banged a shitload of chicks, from all over the world. French, Swedish, Korean, etc. It is pretty fucking amazing. America seems boring and pathetic by comparison.

You can say this is flame, but whatever. It's not. Taking Q's if anyone is awake (no idea what time it is in the States)

Not sure about being a fucking lawyer anymore. Oh and one other thing, if I can make a stable fucking like 4-5% return a year then the savings can last a lot longer than 5-10 years. Its a safety net anyway, not something i am depending on forever

I ignore student loans because I dont want to think of them, and because of the low interest rate. I dont consider them as big a liability because its only 2% and also while Im abroad i ahve deferred them and the gov pays part of the interest. Also, i may be able to get into ICBR adn then after like 20 more years the gov forgives the balance, or if i get 10 years of gov service i think it may be forgiven

of course president rick perry would fuck up ICBR and make us pay 100 percent interest so i could get fucked by the GOP

Is $200,000 (counting 401k and excluding student loans for some reason) really that much? If you get 5% real returns, that is like $10k a year. You can't live off that without eating into your principle pretty fast. I think you need more like $500k to start thinking about living off investment returns.
