i've done well not outlining and not going to class. always above median when i secure a quality outline, but there have been a couple of classes where i got B's because i couldn't get a good outline and the book wasn't written by the prof so i couldn't get his "take" from it.

i do NOTHING during the semester. i go to class once a few weeks in, take notes studiously, compare to my outline to check for deficiencies. i'll do this again late in the semester, and go to the last class to pick up tidbits on the exam.

for finals, i allocate 4-5 full days per exam. for 2-3 days, i read the textbook in its entirety, augmenting the outline and checking for accuracy. then i spend one day memorizing the outline, and making a short 3-5 page outline from it. the last day, i read the long outline twice, and the short one 5-6 times.

in a few classes where i didn't have a good outline, i was still able to do well by reading graded model answers and making quick summaries of the issues they hit, taking note of high point value stuff. you can also pick up some tricks that way...i saw someone pull a slick double reverse ninja move that let him rack up points for an issue twice in the same question. i did the same thing on my exam and profited. you can also see what kind of paragraphs you will get NO points for this way. i actually got an A+ in a class i went to four out of 30 times this way.
