Uh, are you serious? Much of the rest of the world is passing lower stimulus that's both front-loaded and aimed at keeping people employed. The US did the opposite of that. Hence the EU is kicking our ass, at which point I'm shocked the population isn't furious.

What are you talking about? EU unemployment is projected to hit 10.7 in 2010, and it was the GOP that required that more of the stimulus be tax cuts rather than aid to states which would have been used to maintain employment levels.

the eurozone's current unemployment rate is 9.7%. the EU as a whole includes lots of festering TTT former warsaw pact countries that drag up the average. but countries like the netherlands have rates in the 4% range.

Right, but those countries have super generous automatic stabilizer social safety nets. If you are saying that Obama's mistake was not to literally convert the U.S. economy to a socialist system then you are criticizing from the left.

But a more left leaning response to the economy isn't a realistic choice. recall that the stimulus only passed because the administration agreed to take out direct stimulus in favor of tax cuts, in addition to cutting the overall size of the package. Your beef isn't with obama, its with people like lieberman, nelson, susan collins, and olympia snowe.

I don't know what you mean by fail. in the absence of the stimulus things would be a complete disaster right now. What was needed is the larger, less tax cut based stimulus initially proposed, that was rejected by the GOP.

obama's people said the following:

-the stimulus means unemployment caps out at 8%

are you saying that obama's own people are total and completely discredited shameless whore liars?

if so, why the fuck should anyone ever trust anything out of those folks? you'll just get torched again by their bullshit.

How is that lying? The economy is even worse than forecast. The proper response is more stimulus, which the administration would love to do, but the opposition is preventing.

What do you suggest that they should have done instead of the stimulus?

they LIED about the stimulus keeping unemployment from rising above 8%!

i no longer care what they do. JUST DON'T LIE ABOUT WHAT CAN BE ACHIEVED.

and you know what? if obama actually wants a more robust liberal stimulus, why doesn't he get out there and fucking LOBBY for it? all he does is "compromise" like a fucking no-principles pussy.

It wasnt a lie. Thats what their numbers showed. The calculations were publically available and transparent. Economic forcasting isnt a science like physics. they may have been wrong, which goes to their competence, but they werent dishonest.

Obama pushed for the biggest stimulus that was politically feasible. Do you want him to somehow disband congress?

You may want to look into the 60 vote supermajority in the senate. there were 58 democratic senators when the stimulus was passed.

There is no guarantee they could have gotten through the Senate with 60, its a lot harder to get 60 people to vote in block than 40. I don't see how you can blame Obama for the fact the Democratic Party includes conservatives like Ben Nelson.

I don't think that anyone is seriously arguing that Obama's policies are focused towards fixing the economy and creating jobs - his policies are job killers focused on expanding the social safety net. I love how every fucking left wing media spin article starts with "unemployment rose UNEXPECTEDLY" as if it were some shocking occurrence that Obama never could have predicted or prevented. At what point will unemployment start to increase "expectedly"? I've been expecting increases for over a year now.

The stimulus was a colossal fucking failure. LOL @ all the liberals who have to pretend like a billion dollar giveaway to left wing interest groups was good economic policy. There was enough money there to employ all the unemployeds at decent salary for a couple of years. It says a lot when an expenditure of that scope is so poorly allocated that unemployment continues to skyrocket.

I'm not holding that out as good policy, I'm just using it to drive home how massive the expenditure was. If the stimulus had been like 75% tax incentives/25% aid, unemployment would be much lower.

It's a very basic principle that the government should subsidize that which it wants more of. I find it telling that Obama chose to subsidize unemployment and left wing interest groups. There was enough money in that bill to give massive, massive tax subsidies to companies for creating jobs. Subsidies so massive that they would make it stupid NOT to be hiring people. But instead of subsidizing employment, Obama spends money on time-delayed pork and making unemployment more comfortable. WHY?

i agree with this. most job creation occurs not in the government or even big firms, but those small start-ups and entrepreneurial ventures. Tax credits would have provided a huge incentive for those people to hire workers. Thus far, the stimulus has only grown the size of government. Massive failure on Obama's part.

There was no financing whatsoover available for small firms to expand last year, and no demand for their products even if they had manage to swing some expansion. You are completely delusional as to the appropriate response to a collapse in private demand. It is the government that has to be the consumer of last resort in these situations,

What exactly would those companies have done with those extra employees? Private demand has completely collapsed. The only entity in any position to do substantial consumption is the government, either in the form of public sector employment or hiring private sector firm to build infrastructure. thats why the tax cut portion of the stimulus is totally unhelpful in the short term.

Disingenuous and stupid point. When news media say that, they mean the actual figure was above the median or mean estimates of a group of experts.

The jobs number isn't pretty, but job losses have substantially declined from earlier this year. Many of the stimulus programs (aid to states, for example) have slowed or prevented job losses. What I think everyone agrees on is that there should have been more infrastructure spending in year 1; remember though, the size of many of these programs were cut down in the bill making process.

Overall, if I were to ask Obama/Rahm to change one thing, it would be to be more specific about what they want in bills. Both in the stimulus and health care, it's been too process oriented.

800 billion.

Not to mention, 800 billion could have employed 20,000,000 people for $30,000/yr for 18 months. (cut half that for administrative expenses and it's 10,000,000).... that's about how many total unemployed people there are

Could have revolutionized our infrastructure, instead Obama bankrupted our children... yaaaaay.

this argument was being made in the late 90s. so it would work this way:

if you were making $50k at 40 hours a week ($24/hour), the new "information age" economy would allow you to make $50k at 10 hours a week ($96/hour) due to increased productivity.

What happened to that?
