I want to QUIT BIGLAW and go to BUSINESS SCHOOL????

Date: November 7th, 2009 4:59 PM Author: Milky principal's office ape I've been doing my BIGLAW bullshit job for four plus years now and I can't take this shit anymore. It's just a never ending quest to bill and bill and work for assholes and peons whose only hobby in life is to work.
So I'm looking into business school because I am good at not studying, drinking, networking, drinking, hitting on bitches, not studying, hitting on bitches, and drinking.
If I take the GMAT and don't do well can I take it again or will the schools I apply to average my scores? How does that work?
What the fuck is on the GMAT anyway? Is it harder than the LSAT?
I only want to go to MBA school abroad because most of those schools are one year only and they are generally much cheaper than American schools. |

And I don't have to go to a top school like INSEAD or London Business School. I'd be content at a lower ranked school. I want a school that is relatively cheap but still ranked okay. |

You'll work so many hours there that your kids won't know who you are and you wife will cheat on you and then divorce you and take half your shit. Completely untrue. The JD is not as flexible a degree as people seem to think it is. If you had a background in finance, management, accounting, econ, even math, this might be more accurate, but if you're a typical liberal arts undergrad with a JD, you aren't going to get a business type job without significant relevant WE + luck. |

First, the billable hour model is insane. It forces you to be inefficient. You constantly have never ending pressure to bill. It is just insane to think of doing that for one's entire life.
Second, lawyers are generally anti-social risk adverse losers who have no outside interests. 95% of the partners I've meet have one hobby: working. They sacrifice their entire existence on this Earth in order to do mundane work for corporations that has typically has no benefit for society whatsoever.
Sure, business is the same in some respects. The hours can suck but at least you aren't doing billables. You are judged by the quality of your work and other attributes instead of how many hours you bill.
And without question MBA types are ten times more social, ten times more creative, and ten times less risk adverse. They actually enjoy b-school because all they do is drink and network. Sure they are douchbags big time but whatever.
SO anyway, I really regret ever going to LS. I wasted so much time and stressed out so much to enter and survive in this BS profession. I don't want to turn into a zombie law firm lawyer who sacrifices all just for the sake of making money. Fuck that, I have too many interests.

Biz school won't be much better. My McKinsey friends hate their lives because they get paid shit for living out of a suitcase four days a week. My IBD friends hate their lives because they don't stop working. The grass always seems greener but the real holy grail in any career field is the 9-6 six figure job where you can have a life. |

I've tried this entire year to get a new job in government, inhouse or a smaller firm but I have had no luck at all. |

I took the GMAT and got a 760 (V:48, Q:48). My LSAT was 167, back when that was 96th percentile. I only studied for the GMAT for a few weeks, so I don't know if I was lucky or it was just a lot easier than the LSAT. Anyway, I got accepted to a top MBA program and will start in January. I'm completely happy with my decision. Life's too short to stay in an unsatisfying career, and even a great salary doesn't make up for a job you don't enjoy. I still have a bit left, around 35k, but those are low interest. I managed to save a little money on top of that but not enough for an MBA, so I am going to have to take out loans again. It should be about 100K at most, maybe a bit less if I'm careful. I'm doing a one year MBA outside the US, so the exchange rate is kind of fucking me, but the school seems to have great career placement and it won't keep me outside the workforce too long, so there's lower opportunity cost than a 2 year MBA. In the end, getting an MBA, especially at this program, is something I've wanted to do for a long time. I actually want to learn about finance, management, marketing, econ; it's not something I'm doing solely for career opportunities. And I honestly don't care if I make less money than I did as a biglaw associate, I just want to enjoy my work. |

I've looked into Oxford, London School of Business, Cambridge, and those schools in France and Spain. I still need to take some GMAT practice tests to see how I do. I'd also consider shit in Asia but not sure what's good. Heard CEIB in China or something is okay. |

For reputation and career prospects, I guess just check out the Economist and Forbes rankings. There really aren't that many top MBA programs in Europe and Asia. Like you said, LBS, INSEAD, Oxford, IE, IMD etc. I'm not that familiar with the Asian ones.
I wasn't sure if MBA programs were receptive to applications from lawyers, but I get the sense that if your GMAT is good, especially the Quant section, you'll have a good shot. I think it helps that they like to have a diverse class and a lawyer stands out among all the bankers, consultants and managers. But I also think you have to have a good reason for wanting to get the MBA besides "I hated law." It might be tough for someone who comes from the litigation side. Since I was in corporate and was working with bankers and company managment all the time, I could plausibly argue that I had some relevant experience and an idea of what I was getting into, I guess...anyway I got in. It remains to be seen what potential employers will think of my background when I'm looking for jobs. |

I am in litigation but I'm in a subspeciality that relates to business. I think I can wing it and say that I am more interested in being on the business side of this area instead of the legal side. |
