Am I doing the math wrong, or is that only a difference of 53 lawyers? Somehow I thought they laid off more than that, even with the new first years coming in.

this will probably only become clearer as more numbers come out, but the story of 2009 -> partners save themselves first, so associates and staff suffer

It's bullshit, revenues are fairly steady or only down a bit, yet PPP's look fine. Partners, who are supposed to bring in business, can't. Rather than taking a hit, they gut associates, salaries, and other costs (summers, etc.)

they cut partners too, that shit gets less press than associate firings. A partner asked to retire isnt going to email ATL about it. Firms are smaller from top to bottom.

you dont know what the debt picture at all these firms looks like. If they took out loans expecting growth of 5% a year and are stuck with big interest payments and no growth they gotta cut dude. Some places were clearly over leveraged. Reed Smith picked up an entire floor in a skyscraper they clearly dont need and cant afford. WTF is rent like for a whole floor in Manhattan?
