told them i was worried about my curfew but they said thered be girls there. i put on my winter coat and thought at least mom would be happy i was dressed for the weather but there was snow and ice on the rocks climbing down to the frozen river. id forgotten my gloves so when we got down there my hands were getting numb. tennisdood was there already and i looked at him cold and nervous and scared cause they were all older than me. he just took off his gloves and started rubbing my hands and we looked out onto the ice and watched the girls skate, little figure-eights, forever, forever, forever. mcbeef was watching us and the girls at the same time and he said thats your curfew you have to always feel alive man.

well when the seal-light and summerskin leave us we'll yet have romania, sanddollars, and the scar in your shoulder where i bit you accidentally as we clambered out of the ferris wheel. for the next two thousand mornings the mark will remain - a living fossil in warm flesh, canine, incisor, and the last day before we all got back to life.

for awhile the scar was fresh and i could still say the hills and valleys of my soul were formed from the primal structures of your toothy solar winds. but over the years more earthly winds eroded the topography, skin smoothed out, mountain became desert, object became representation. now i touch my shoulder remembering a memory of a memory that wasn't always just a memory and i want to be bitten again, i want to be formed again, i want to be muddy and primordial again.

when i was mother earth and you were my clay-child there was nobody from here to there who could touch us. i guess it's all gone different now but i've got this little bottle that i keep in a place untouched by light and prying eyes, and evry so often on one of those thursdays when the swing shift's gotten me all bruised and gelatinous i hold it to my nose and take a deep sniff of what-it-was. smells like popcorn, your conditioner, and all solzy's flea-bit philosophies, not things to be studied but rather just to be uttered under a rotting boardwalk, considered for a moment, and passed off to the uncaring sea

god damn indeed is what we said when we reached the crest of the dunes and looked toward the ocean and the sun dipping into the distant curve of the horizon to illuminate unseen and unknown lands we decided we had come upon an ideal idle spot to rest our limbs so we sat atop the dune and honey had a little tobac left and so we had our fix of nicotine something that always made our synapses twinkle like the stars that had ascended in the time between lighting the cigarette and burning our thumbs with the final puff unlike other deserts this didn't become too brisk in the evening something we attributed to the ocean's proximity and i approached the sea and with a waterlogged stick etched `xo' into the wet sand smoothed over by the ebb and flow and it was the ebb and flow that washed away what i etched and we thought it an apt metaphor for all we had seen and done and all the lusts and libations that littered our way and just then you smirked and said `listen' and the wind's familiar whispers echoed in the calm hollow of the night as a shooting star passed above banking off an intergalactic backboard and forcefully two-handed back into the hole by whokebe moments before he went supernova but light and space are funny like that one travelling incomprehensibly fast the other incomprehensibly immense such that it was really moments nay millions of years after the fact we were still awestruck

i don't mean to spoil this, but this reminds me of the time when my sisters and i shoveled the snow off our grandparent's pond at dusk and by the time we were finished it was dark, so we laid three flashlights on the ice and skated in the dark as the snow fell.

and the light is shiny and the light is good and when you see the light you know the light is what comes from a million miles away just to tell you it's alright the light is what the universe spent days and days thinking over and forming and getting stressed about and missing its deadline for and going to bed sad and waking up exhausted for the light is what was made to grow things and know things and the light is why the universe had to take advil for like three weeks and snorted coke that one time to pull an all-nighter

The search has returned. The lost memories of yore that slipped through our fingers like the slowly dissipating wisps of a perfect dream in the waning hours of night have returned with the warm embrace of dawn. After a night of futile wailing into a dark and indifferent void, at sunrise we sit atop the hills gazing out across eternity and see the slowly rising spirits of antiquity dancing beneath ancient nebulae and we smile and know that we are dancer and we are home.

we're home when we can hear the sounds out of one ear, smell the smells but just a whiff, when we can remember, when we can place something but not find it. we're home when we're far from home, not close to home. we're at home looking up at the stars we call home.

We, who stare at the stars and smile at the faint recognition of our own gaze reflected back upon us. We, mere pinpoints of consciousness adrift in a dark ocean of ceaselessly spinning galaxies and fire. We, small flickering lights twinkling boldly in the dark night, faint traces of light marking the awakening of a small fraction of the universe as it gazes back at itself and marvels at the beauty and remembers its purpose.

if anything the stars are dead when they get to us. if anything home is burnt down, gone supernova, exploded, in flames, raped and pillaged. if we are to be stars the control is not, the equations are not, the economy and efficiency and management of it is not for anything because it'll all fall down, our bodies in a few years, our empires in a few more, our systems of language and thought soon after. most of the universe is in a dark age all the time, and if there's anything we can do it's to be a star and a home to the sad ice-skaters and odyssean steam-engines we'll never meet. so write yourself, paint yourself, experiment on yourself, make a theory of yourself, but let go of yourself before it's too late or you'll crush the light and the hearth.

The stars are never dead. Though they may burn out and fade, their spirit - proudly shouted for millennia - bears witness to their story. Their light blooms forever in all directions proclaiming their tale to all who care to listen and ponder their insights. When we spy a lone star creeping across the empty sky and ponder the futility of its existence, know that it lives forever as we bear witness to its faithful emissary racing tirelessly toward the edge of eternity with its message - "Though I am gone, I once was. Ponder me, and you shall know thyself."

true artful expression lies at the collision between the racing steam engine of youth and the twisted track of adulthood-the conductor realizes at the last awful second that not only were the parallel tracks a figment, but that the entire train is less than substantial, like he was only dreaming of the train, or the train was maybe dreaming of him.

seldom did the conductor's thoughts gain such fervency he was wont to nod his head to the click of the smoothed over steel of the car's wheel against the track and inside he would feel open and vast and all the while empty like the nebraskan horizon but it could have been a horizon in the siberian steppe or anywhere for that matter there was nothing wholly unique about him about where he was about any of it

why did we come this way this very long way he thought to himself and he took in another few burns of his cigarette before burning his throat with more cheap vodka and all the while all the very while all the very god damned while he wondered why we came this way this very long way from home
