the new NYU curve has more As and fewer B-'s than the CLS curve, and that probably contributed to NYU fairing better this year.

That's possible. Of course the curves were never identical. Before this, NYU's median was around .05 lower than CLS's. If employers were just comparing GPAs willy nilly, a few NYUers likely got screwed at the margins.

That establishes an upper bound but is otherwise unhelpful. Have you glanced at grade distributions and established some sense of the frequency with which they're distributed?

At NYU they're discretionary and usually capped at 1 person, but I get the sense that most of the profs think they're supposed to give them out on a regular basis.

I know for CLS, we'll have the stats in april when they hand out the EIP stats to the 1L's (unless they try to cover it up by not releasing them this year).

They also did an online survey about callbacks and rumor (completely unsubstantiated) was that almost 40 people had zero callbacks.

Are you including those who struck out with biglaw but landed some other random job (gov't, PI, etc.) in the pile of gainfully employed 2Ls? I suppose that would be technically correct, but given the fact that most of those positions do not lead to full time positions after law school, it would be a bit deceptive to lump them in there with the people who managed to land biglaw jobs.

Subject: it's real bad ya'll

Public Interest department sent out email one month ago overcome with joy at the 229 2Ls that had expressed the desire to work in public interest and receive PILC funding. Of that 50% of the class, I would estimate that half to 75% are still not sure where they will be volunteering their services this summer. The competition is fierce. The halls have been lined with their perky smiles and sunken eyes. 25% will basically strike out and will end up RAing or working for some school affiliated institution, if they are lucky.

To be fair, I think the deadline for first "expressing interest" in PILC funding was way back at the beginning of september last year, so it's pretty likely that some of those students were applying out of an abundance of caution--I certainly considered doing as much.

W/ transfers the class is around 463. Many of the top half students are doing the PILC fair because they did not want big law, this is at least 10%. This leaves approximately 40% of the bottom halvers fighting for public interest jobs. I do not know how anyone can assess who is doing better with these incomplete numbers. Anyways, better than this shit can still be shit. I don't think anyone is quite ready to pull out their data.

Really? In a normal year, I think NYU placed about 80% into firms. I think about 1/2 of the remaining 20% sought PILC funding as a last resort. I wouldn't be surprised if that 80% dropped to 60% or lower last year.

Really? Are you conflating post grad employment with 2L summer employment? At CLS, the 2007 stats show that 398 took a 2L SA, which = 93% of the class. Post grad only 80% are at firms (due to no-offers, clerks, and people who never wanted to work for a firm but still wanted the 2L summer cash).

He's talking about N. I looked through my email and wasn't able to find the number he's talking about. But even if it's correct, as I mentioned above, the deadline for "expressing interest" was before most firms had extended offers, making it highly likely that the number quoted includes quite a few people who applied for funding out of caution rather than necessity.

You might be right here. However, some that did not express interest at that time had to subsequently catch up on their obligations. The summary of my story is that at least 25% of the class is really nervous right now and will be strown amongst the small public interest internships that will have them and that at least 1/3 of the people that wanted biglaw did not get it. Not a shocker, there are no jobs.

Sounds about right, I (non-URM) got a 1L gig last year (at a firm that did layoffs a month after they offered me) as did a couple of my friends even though there was supposedly no market for 1L's.

No clue as to why, I did jack shit all summer too. I have a return offer for this summer (2 week type thing) and another offer at different firm.
