Very interested in pursuing POLITICS or JOURNALISM. Would love to be speechwriter, communications director, press secretary... within print and broadcast journalism would love to be a political reporter, broadcast journalist, writer...

I am about to begin my last year of UG at a TTT university (CUNY in NYC) and graduate with BA in Political Science and Econ. If I was unable to get one of the above-mentioned jobs upon graduation, I was thinking of pursuing 1 yr MA in Communications from a top school to strengthen my resume (in addition to internships I have).

Thoughts?

yeah, journalism is more of a dream than anything simply because i wouldn't want to be a reporter for a weekly or something or move out of NYC.

that said, politics is kind of my practical answer to fulfilling that desire/interest

yes, it has a good rep. but why not just stay at cuny? they recently opened a new j-school that's pretty good - and very cheap

i kind of like the idea of following up a CUNY education with an internationally known and prestigious school like stanford.

i know the graduate center at CUNY has a good program, but it has nowhere near the cachet that other schools have and i'm really interested in cultivating a career where i'd reasonably be able to progress into the higher echelons of political PR or political journalism.

stanford is prestigious for law, medicine, and business. No one will give a shit about your MA in communications. As a matter of fact you might do better branding yourself as a locally educated guy than a clear striver.

NO because communications is inherently TTT. It's a worthless degree that only serves to generate revenue for universities.

Don't be a prestige whore for this degree. If you feel like you can't write speeches without grad school, then go to the cheapest one possible, then find an upstart congressman to work for. You'll have to start as a legislative assistant no matter what, but the MA might help you get promoted faster.

at the MA level, do not go paying for a degree. there are plenty of passable options that will fund you. school name really doesn't matter in this case.
