Guy I know is at SDNY; he's been there for about 12 years. I imagine he makes about 120k+ (or whatever the highest grade is nowadays). Granted, this is not answering the OP's question, but I thought I would put it out there.

The opportunity cost is huge, though. The exit options are unbelievable from SDNY.

Sometimes, he tells me about the exits some of his colleagues make. Millions--no exaggeration. I think the most I heard of was some guy a few years ago that left for a cool 3.5.

IDK how easy in-house would be, though. I mean, I know he would basically have to start as a first year for anything corp. It is all crim lit.

I feel like a SoCal based F500 would hire him as an in-house to consult on white collar defense

Yeah, I think white collar is the cr for most of those guys. From what I can tell, though, they don't typically go in-house...just lateral to a firm for the white-collar stuff.

LOL. AUSA's make less than $45k + locality pay.

EDIT: start at, obv. So for major market, think ~55k.

It can't be that low. GS-12, which is where clerks start, is more like $55K + locality pay. Since the USAO's hire people with 2 years or more of experience, that'd be more equivalent to a GS-13 or GS-14, which is more like $65-75K + locality. Don't quote me, I'm not looking it up.

Obviously, AUSA's don't use the GS scale, but my understanding is that their scale is slightly better than the GS scale.

In sum, my guess is $80-90K for the typical guy who does 3-4 years of other stuff and then becomes an AUSA in a costly city.

Edit: Actually, clerks may start at GS-11, I can't remember.

They don't really have "starting" salaries since they don't hire you new. Pay will be commensurate experience, but lower than a firm by about 100k.

The joke is, "What's the difference between an AUSA and big law? About a hundred grand, cuz it sure ain't the hours."

The US Atty'll be making about 150k.

an actual USA is on a fastrack to getting an actual Article III judicial appointment or has ability to lateral to partner at V10. You also dont work that hard.

You know what the difference is between an AUSA and a biglaw litigation associate?

The AUSA has a shot at making partner.
