I met the dean of my T14 last week at an alumni reception. I asked him how current students were faring in the tough job market, and he claimed that grads of my alma mater were generally unaffected. He said 100% of the Class of '09 had jobs, and 95% of this year's class would have jobs.

I assume he's full of shit, but is there any way to verify this?

100% (of alumni who returned phone calls from OCI 9 months after graduate and were actively "seeking employment" had obtained some kind of employment)

That 100% figure just ignores people who don't respond, people who are unemployed for several months, people who have given up on finding work, and people who aren't working in law.

Nah, I'm too lazy to do either of these. I'm just curious, that's all, I don't really care either way.

I just found the numbers he gave me to be incredible based on what I've heard elsewhere, including this board, and was hoping there was an easy way to confirm or deny them.

My school is in the Northeast, and the dean claimed that the more "remote" T14 schools (like Duke or MIchigan) were the ones hit hard by the recession.

Maybe he just figured I was a typical horse's ass alum who would eagerly write checks to the school after hearing this? He was wrong though (at least about writing checks).

So, it is either CLS, NYU, Penn, or Cornell. I am guessing Cornell. Penn seems too far south to say Northeast, and you probably would have said CCN for CLS or NYU. If it is one of CCN, then, the number of 3Ls with jobs does not mesh with 100%. I can attest to this from the 3Ls I know.

Maybe he meant 100% of the people who responded to the survey.

He didn't mention any survey. I'm guessing it was based on non-scientific data.

When I was a student the dean knew almost nobody, so I highly doubt he knows what he's talking about.

In modern times, it is often a school, college, or university attended during one's formative years,[1] which is usually interpreted to mean from where one earned one's first degree or doctorate, or both.[2]

motive might be despicable, but they are helping people in the end. i mean, it's their job to make sure that people get jobs. im not sure how you can fault them for not doing theirs.

granted, i know your OCS has been conspicuously inactive since EIW, so perhaps they should be doing even more?

i agree that helping people is good, but what i fault them for is booking these as "jobs" for the purpose of employment data. seems clear the purpose isn't to "do their jobs" but rather to mislead future students with dishonest post-grad employment data. if they were serious about doing the right thing, they would implement a program like this and still count its recipients as "unemployed," which really they are (grant is only a temporary benefit)

I would guess no school save perhaps YHS have 100% for '09 and 95% for '10. Like some here have pointed out, you said T14 and not some other designation (like T6); I'm assuming that analysis is correct.

I'm a 3L at MVP and I can assure you that the '10 number is absolutely impossible ... unless you count barrista as employment. Such numbers were not even credible in good times, and were only achieved through 'creative accounting'. Imagine then ITE.
