If you're not spending at least some of your time targeting unpaid internships, you really should be. Before people get desperate and snap all of those up, too. Does the DA or PD office appeal to you at all, or no? Focusing heavily on big firm jobs is a major waste of your time at this point.

I am not a master man at this, someone else could probably give you better advice (I do not recommend career services).

Doing this either in your hometown or law school town is probably the best way to make it as painless as possible.

I would imagine most DA's offices would have information on their website for any summer programs they might have. In general, I recommend being as persistent as shit, calling and asking who's in charge of such decisions as often as it takes to talk to that person. Any unsolicited resumes you fax will get throw directly in the trash by a secretary.

Just tell her what it is you're looking to do (provide free labor), and that you'd like to send a resume/cover letter and come to speak with the attorney. If they have a place for you (basically, if they aren't already letting their friend's kid do the same thing), you'll get called for an interview. If not, no one will ever call you back. Repeat with every lawyer in town. But don't stop calling until you get a "no". They've got a lot more important things to spend their time on than you. If you offer free labor to enough doods, you will get an interview/hired. Lawyerdoods from your UG/LS should be your first contacts.

I might do this if it raises my GPA for OCI. I am not sure summer school grades would come out in time for OCI, though, or if they would even count for OCI GPA (my school doesn't have a summer program).

I REALLY cannot afford to pay summer tuition, but the alternative might be being fucked for 2L summer and after graduation.

you overestimate the importance of your 1L summer gig to 2L hiring. Just have something on there to talk about in interviews. Doesn't matter what. That said, summer school is probably no better than a blank space. Do you know any 2Ls who can give you some suggestions, put in a good word wherever they spent 1L summer, etc?

heh. ok. well, my suggestion was the Queen's DA's office Domestic Violence unit. They let students prosecute cases and they have a TON of work. They let you do the whole thing from intake to standing up in court.

It is awesome. And the guy in charge of it is a great guy. The process is as simple as talking to him about it.

It is just difficult to set this up remotely...

1) go to your professors. explain your situation. ask for help. many may be willing to talk to you about exploring options.

2) try to use student group connections. Fed Soc is great for this.

As for the professors.. don't worry about the grades. you need help. they are supposed to try to provide help. go talk to them. you may be surprised.

Did you have any professors who did like/ talk to you, grade notwithstanding? If you don't have some kind of relationship with any of your profs, now would an excellent time to start. Irrelevant that your current profs have not given you a grade yet.

highly unlikely

the honors programs don't allow non-third year student applicants and they are looking for experienced attorneys for other positions. This is especially true now... these positions are flooded with applicants right now.... but try USAJOBS and see what you can find (fed gov job posting site.. includes lawyer positions)

EDIT: just to be clear... with the right experience you could apply for a gov job later.

I would take a step back and figure out what cases you can make for which career paths. Have you taken crim classes? labor classes?

It's tough to talk about career paths without outing myself. I'm taking only one elective in a specialized field this semester, and I like it. But one of my rejections after interview was for a fellowship in this field, which really stung. I thought my interview had gone pretty well, and I genuinely do like the subject matter.
