It is based on SAT scores, acceptance rate, and the % of students who were in the top 10% of their HS class. If you weight those factors differently you can move the ranking, of course.
1. CalTech 2. Stanford 3. Pomona 4. Harvey Mudd 5. Claremontt McKenna 6. Berkeley 6. USC 8. Scripps 9. UCLA 10. UCSD 11. Occidental 12. Pitzer 13. UCSB 13. UC Irvine 15. UC Davis 16. UC Santa Cruz 17. Cal Poly SLO 17. U of San Diego 19. UC Riverside 20. UC Merced
I didn't look at any other schools. Its likely there are schools I didn't look at that would push UCR and UCM off the list, since they suck. |

SLO has a significantly better student body that all but UCLA and berkeley, though pretty close to UCSD/davis. UCSB is an excellent party school, but the majority of the students there are retards, irvine has a significantly smarter student body, though completely azn and unattractive. also you cant tout the student body at the university of spoiled children for anything. Anyway, you can drop acceptance rate from consideration and Pomona and HM are basically tied, but Pomona wins by a nose (3 points) on SAT scores. |

I know you are pointing to the SAT scores, but you should probably check to see how they collect the data on scores. USC allows applicants to submit their best scores from sections no matter what test date. UCLA requires applicants to use a score from one single test sitting.
Basically, if you're a dumb and study for one section at a time, you can game the system for USC and not UCLA. |

The top three schools in California are, without a doubt, Stanford/Caltech/Berkeley. The exact order there might be subject to some dispute, but those are HYS and there's no question about it.

In my formula, throwing out the acceptance rate makes Stanford fall to 4th place. It doesn't change anything else.

My formula gives Santa Clara a score of 648 and UCSC 653. (Compared to 847 for CalTech.)
