Want to keep my options open, I think.

I'm not sure I'm as into research as I think I am. If I HAVE to have a typical desk job, I'd rather be in a decent city making $160k while doing it.

I have a 3.7 science GPA; what LSAT score should I shoot for for HYS? T14 in general?

What's the best way to prep for this thing?

Get on Amazon and buy sets of "10 Official Past LSAT's" practice tests. Do not buy the Princeton Review or Kaplan "prep books" because those aren't necessarily actual test questions.

I got a 143 on my first try, luckily was accepted into Goldengate as an affirmative action admit, and transferred to UT after being in the top 11% of my class.

i can't really answer that, I don't know. someone who loves writing and poring over documents and legal research, perhaps? law school can be fun, but seriously, you spend tons of time learning how to format proper citations. it is complete bullshit. and a 'career' is not even guaranteed.

this is such bullshit flame. do you think fortune 500 companies are going to continue paying top dollar for slave laborers to do their work in bombay, without an american law degree? no, only for the most basic doc review.

outsourcing is not as big a concern as people here make it seem.

why do you say that?

obamacare won't take effect until 2014

then it's a couple years lag before it affects med school enrollment (2016)

then those people will get through med school and residency (at least a decade further)

So not until 2026 (when I'm 50) will I even be at risk of seeing a doc who went through med school under obamacare and another 30 years (when i'm 80) before they're the majority

don't buy the preptests in print.. either download a torrent or go to one of the companies that sells all 60 .pdfs online, it's like $150 and you get every question ever published. Unless you're prepping early on at 175, you'll need to do 25-30 preptests to max out your potential.

Powerscore Bibles for games and LR are pretty good, never seen their RC book, doubt it's any good, but what the hell.

your science gpa doesnt matter, so sign up for rocks for jocks and 'the sun and its neighbors' and 'how computers are used' and 'film and the quest for meaning' and load up on a pluses

the powerscore lgb is the credited logic games method. you also may need the logical reasoning bible - i didn't use it, i found tests were sufficient.

apart from that you can buy nearly 50 released tests. take them like this:

1) one week x 2 test sections daily, untimed, working through all errors

2) if you can't consistently hit -0 to -3 in each section this way, repeat step 1 for another week

3) complete test with 45 min/section timing, half before half after lunch

4) work through all errors in step 3

5) repeat (3) and (4)

6) after that, do a test every day, cutting 1 min/section whenever you do better than -2 in that section

7) you'll start hitting 170+ in 30 minute sections consistently

congrats, you're done

i scored 175+, this is what i did

because all that matters is the USNews ranking and US news doesn't differentiate, so there isn't an incentive for the law schools to do so. ( indeed there would be costs!)

Numbers are necessary, but definitely not everything, particularly as the quantity of high-numbers applicants continues to grow. Ivy + hard science major MIGHT be worth a point or two on the lsat, all other things being equal, imo.

lmao, you people are making this way too complicated.

Science majors should hit 0 error on games within the time limit after 2 or 3 practices. So you can stop practicing those altogether.

Reading comprehension is really easy too. Its the same as the SAT.. and you cant really improve it much anyways.

The only thing you need to really prep is the word logic questions.

You need a solution to the optimization problem that is your utility function crossed with your employer's. If you think patent law, you're wrong.

1) For prosecution, you're more expensive than someone who didn't go to a good law school. They don't need great lawyers to do it. Thus, if they hire you, they lose money.

2) For litigation, you won't need your science degree at all, therefore you're not allocating your resources efficiently by doing it. Thus, if you work in it, you lose time spent getting your degree.

The only remaining appeal of science-pedigreed patent lawyers is that they impress clients. Of course you won't even see a client until your n-th year in practice. Most of my friends who did science are not in patent law, for these reasons. The problem with patent law is there is almost nothing empirical/theoretical about it. That's what science really is about, being empirical/theoretical. Science isn't about learning what a fucking molecule is and being able to explain it to some circuit court judge who flunked intro to chem.

Old prep tests + the bibles is the way to go, as other people have said. I don't know if these are still easy to find online, but if you have a throw away email address, I'm pretty sure I have all of these on CD at my apt and can email them to you or upload to rapidshare and email the link.

edit: do not go to law school. Take the GMAT instead (really easy, requires minimal prep) and go to business school.

don't go to LS. hiring the last few years has been abysmal, and it is only getting worse. even if you get into CCN (as stated above, HYS is a stretch) you can still get median pwnd and have nothing to show for it (see SHOCK). the LS gamble is not what it used to be.

go get a phd or something, find a way to contribute to society.

if you absolutely must go to LS, only go where you get a full scholly. do not incur a massive amount of debt to roll the oci dice.

On what basis do schools decide to give scholarships? Does economic status play any role? Is this the only time extracurriculars come into play in law admissions? (I'm white btw)

"economic status" only comes into play at yhs. the rest allocate money almost entirely on numbers and urm status

might be able to get a half-_tuition_ scholarship at a school in the 7-14 range with a 172 or 173 or something.

3.7/173 is prolly good for scholarships to some T14. you could def get money to a t25 if you are 170+. i know i will be universally derided by this board, but i think there is some wisdom to taking the money at a lower ranked school where you can pwn the curve and still get biglaw. but it is risky to go to lower ranked schools in general. not so much of a risk if you are playing with house money though.

hard to say. on the one hand, there's never been a riskier time to take on debt at a t14. on the other, the odds of getting biglaw at a non-t14 are vanishingly slim.

dood, its all about numbers with LS. AA is a boost for sure, but not a golden ticket. they do not care about softs or WE for the most part. all schools are trying to game the USNEWS rankings (HYS less so b/c they are already established), so that is what they do.

it's pretty significant. it's just a bit under half tuition. or to put it another way, $60k + interest less of after-tax income to repay post grad
