NYC and Chicago for finance
Date: May 6th, 2010 11:44 AM Author: vermilion skinny woman wrinkle both cities have their strengths. to say one city is better than the other in finance is wrong.
NYC: investment banking, private equity Chicago: proprietary trading, derivatives, high-frequency/quant
a top student at wharton who wants to go into banking or PE should obviously choose NYC while a math/computers genius at MIT would choose a quant trading firm like GETCO or a hedge fund like citadel.

It's ridiculous how insecure he is about chicago and I can't believe that after all these years he's still bitter about not being able to work in NYC finance.
He's on other forums/blogs as well related to NYC and does his same routine where he bashes NYC and hails ARE COUNTRY/chicago as the best city ever, lol |

Will this trend only accelerate, or is it an anomaly due to the beating banking has been taking since late 2007?"
LOL at the first reply: "I love it, whenever I see a post from Quantum, I can always expect a hard-on for Chicago, yet with no numbers to back up his claim.

The consensus seems to be that Chicago offers about 90% of NYC at half the cost. And the lifestyle is more laid-back, and people are not as pretentious as manhattan people. In contrast to NYC, in chicago when you talk to people at clubs, bars, and parties, they're not going to immediately ask you where you went to school and what firm you work at, in order to measure you up.

I know NYU Stern has a great finance program, and its reputation has improved considerably in the last 5 years. Curious to know what their placement is like in BB S&T and also hedge funds. Do most top firms recruit at Stern? |

Date: May 6th, 2010 12:27 PM Author: Bull Headed Chestnut Ticket Booth Circlehead by jjc1122 (Gorilla, 638 Points) on 7/7/08 at 7:55pm It's interesting that people constantly talk about how "glamorous" and "upscale" Manhattan is, but with the exceptions of a few prime areas like fifth, park, and central park west, the island is pretty dirty. there's garbage bags on every street corner, especially in downtown neighborhoods, the buildings are old and grimy, and even "nice" areas like chelsea and upper west side, have MASSIVE housing projects. or to take another example, check out the PATH station in christopher street, which is in west village, a supposedly nice area. it's completely ghetto and full of drug dealers and trannies.
So given such appalling conditions, it doesn't make sense that Manhattan is so expensive. why do people pay such exorbitant fees in rent and other expenses to live in such filth?
