Pretty much all I know is about the layoffs, but got some friends that say good things about their practice.

Dechert was a top two Philly firm since the dawn of time. The opened a new york office to be cool like the big firms. Then they started making a lot of money doing big Pharma defense work and securitizations. Both high leverage shit work for associates. Those partners were greedy and wanted to up billing rates to national firm levels and did. This cost the firm a lot of traditional business and then they just cut a bunch of people including partners in the otherareas too. Now it is a ttt because the Hugh dollar work dried up.

But isn't their dominant practice area financial services? Just perusing Chambers, it looks like they are a lot more than just a pharma and securitization shop. Their corp practice in NY is a band above groups like Ropes, Proskauer, and Akin.

Seems like there is a weird disconnect between what Chambers says and what the general consensus is about their practices.
