Its apparent that 2012 will be shit on just as 2011 was - and to a lesser extent like 2010 was.

Is c/o 2013 potentially setting itself up for a much muc better hiring season?

By the time the class of 2013 graduates, the U.S. economy will be at the worst it's ever been in history. There will be zero job creation, high taxes, high inflation, a nation overrun with immigrants and other oft-breeding races of mongrels. And you all will still be paying 200k+ to get a degree that will be totally useless.

Congrats. You're the dumbest ppl in the history of mankind.

Thinking like this needs to stop. If the economy improves in 2013 firms are not going to need entry level attorneys. They will need mid-level and up. They will be short staffed in those positions, not at entry level

cr. they'll fill c/o 2013's spots with experienced attorneys hired onto their 2nd tier associate track. entry level hiring is so unlikely to improve in the next few years that they'd be foolish to go before actually seeing it pick up for a class.

People are getting a shitload of callbacks this year. As a class of 2011er it makes me sick, even though I got a job personally - many of my much more worthy comrades will be begging in the streets while some little pissant 2012er at median is choosing between 160k jobs.

Is it excessively optimistic to think that at some point firms will need a greater number of junior associates to handle what firms claim has been an uptick in legal work?

Yes because juniors don't do legal work of any substance. Again, there is no deal that exists where first years provide more of a value add than just bringing on some contract attorneys.

but you just told me that first years never bring any value.

but allegedly they bring enough value, in certain cases, where it's important to grow them from the ground up... I'm not trying to be stubborn but there's definitely an important point here: the firms need junior associates. the question really comes down to balancing contract/staff/outsourcing with juniors

It definitely feels like you're being stubborn. At any given point, firms want first years in the pipeline training to become useful seniors. An uptick in legal work does not require more juniors. The usefulness of said juniors will not be realized for several years.

They USED to be billed out at way more per hour than they made, so they were useful in the sense that they covered their salaries, overhead and put some cash into the partners' pockets. But now that clients are wising up and refusing to pay for first years, summer classes of 100 aren't worth it anymore.
