Is Chicago's OCI really going that poorly?

It certainly seems this way; unless, for whatever reason, employers are slow to get back to us this year.
But nyc's tendencies are established, and if we were going to hear we would have. A bloodbath is probably the only way to view it

The problem is that the "lesser Chicago firms" aren't going to have 70 student summer classes to dump droves of Chicago 2Ls into, unlike HYSCN with respect to top NYC firms. Mayer Brown had something like 9 2Ls last summer.
In contrast, there are at least 5 NYC firms with huge summer classes next summer: Cleary, Simpson, Paul Weiss, Debevoise, DPW, Cravath, S&C.
I have a feeling that Chicago students did fine if they targeted NYC. Targeting any other market but that and Houston has, from what I've seen, been suicide for all but the top students.

No. I think Houston firms are also going to have gargantuan summer classes. They also have a fetish for T10 law students with strong ties to TX.
CA firms historically don't take on many SAs, and the market is cyclical so there's low job security.
DC is competitive as hell.
What does that leave you in terms of major markets??? Not fucking much.

tyty for this chart. I found the Baker data confusing since they only had 2 summers in '08; turns out they "mistakenly" messed up their NALP data by filling up the wrong row.
The 2008-10 numbers are actually: 24 14 (8 offers) 4
In 08, 09 they hired a number of 1L's. LOL
Imo, the 2011 numbers won't look much better when they come out in a couple of months. But I think 2012 will look up

to be honest, the self-selection -- and corresponding onslaught -- into Chicago shouldn't account for the majority of the pain here.
Chicago isn't placing into NYC at nearly the same click as our peers. This is troubling. I feel like Penn is doing a better job placing their at-median kids into firms.

I don't doubt your anecdotal evidence, but OCS released the "who works where" list for the c/o 2011 (that just finished summering). Seems like median and above medians did fine in NYC. Multiple ppl ended up at Debevoise, DPW, Paul Weiss, etc. and that was last year, which I would think was worse than this year. Typically 1/3 of the LR types head to DC, not NYC
But yeah, sucks that Chicago biglaw has gone from 900 SA's to 250 (probably no more than 300 this upcoming summer). It's probably less than both those numbers; half the firms listed in a previous post don't pay market. By contrast, NYC has probably gone from ~3500 to 2000. Keep in mind though that uchi's class is pretty small (200), tends to disperse geographically, not many HYS'ers come to chicago, and chicago firms like seeing chicago ties; hence I don't think relatively speaking uchi is placing poorly in chicago
