My question is why VC firms trust the law firms? Do the biglaw partners in these areas have enough business expertise to evaluate the start-ups before "connecting them" to their VC contacts?

Subject: VC

This kind of referral has been going on forever, though it's more commonly the other way around: VC steers startup to law firm who'll charge reasonably and do decent work. In answer to your question, a referral does not equal an investment. No VC will invest based on a recommendation from anybody. They will conduct mucho independent inquiry. I was a Cooley Godward client, BTW, in one well financed Si Valley startup. Cooley was fine, and the company eventually did an IPO. Our VC's paired us with Cooley, not vice versa.

Those shit firms are on the fringe of "BIGLAW" offering firesale prices. This isn't novel and the only surprising thing is that it took this long.

wilson sonsini is v50, cooley is v60, and both are among the best firms in the country for VC.

actually, vc is a really interesting niche. alternative billing strategies and actually getting to work with small companies (and sometimes taking equity interest) is a welcome departure from simple due diligence on other people's deals.

Lead counsel to the sellers on the most important M&A deal this year. So good call by you, MFE.

This actually happens too. Some Biglaw firms do have small employment law practice groups that do pitch exactly that sort of thing when they are retained to work on compensation packages and shit like that.

of course biglaw partners who have been working with startups and VCs for 10-25 years have the "expertise" to evaluate which startups look promising and introduce the leads to VCs.

Yes, but it's not going to be any actual business elements (e.g. the code or the business plan or the marketing strategy or whatever) that gets their attention. 9x out of 10 the start-up will have a CEO and/or Founder that they know has a good rep., strong background, or some other hook to get a VC interested.

This thread is the best proof that XOXO is 100% comprised of pre-law poli sci shitheads talking out of their asses and I'm wasting my life by spending any time with you people. Transactional lawyers introduce prospective/targeted clients to potential investors constantly. That's like 60% of a rainmakers job on the transactional side. This is what M&A lawyers do, it's what real estate lawyers do, it's the majority of your value to a prospective client. Do you people think clients give a shit what's in the documents, or that they even bother to read them all the way through, or that they care what you think about the latest developments in commentary on material adverse change definitions? Clients want money. Duuh-fucking-uuuh.
