Date: September 9th, 2010 10:47 PM Author: Contagious magenta toaster kitty this trend is really interesting, and anecdotally accurate. it largely reflects a glut of qualified clerkship applicants who don't need to be trained as thoroughly as someone who has just graduated.
as a practical matter, this means that if you feel that the plan is keeping you down, then (1) you need profs to go to bat for you during the summer (which means lining up your ducks in the spring), or (2) wait until you're a 3L and eat the gap year at a firm or fellowship. |

Both Judges I clerked for often looked for either previous clerkship experience or work experience (either before or after law school). They seemed unwilling to hire straight out of law school, primarily based on problems with previous clerks that came straight from law school. The 3L's at HYSCCN (and to a lesser extent, the rest of T14) who are in the top 1-3 percent of their classes will always get the best clerkships right out of law school.
