Its usually tax breaks to companies so they can set up shop in a given area. For example, the state of Texas offering Toyota special incentives to have a factory in San Antonio.
They aren't a bad thing. You use tax incentives to get someone to change their habits so its no big deal.
My one issue with tax incentives is solely with Wal Mart. They will get a tax break from x county for x years. Then after x years they ask for a new store to be built and ask for more tax breaks. The problem with this is that you have burbs with empty shopping areas that are a blight on the area.

The point is that you are a true believer conservatard, while the people in power are just self interested.
Anyone who still believes that free market principles can work in reality is a complete moron.

TCR. Also steel (tariffs), trucking (public financing of the roads), alternative energy.
I'm a conservative and I don't support these either (not sure about defense--I know nothing about the industry). Conservatives should support a free and level market, not one in which companies with political clout get subsidies.
The discredited "corporate welfare" claim always raised by liberals is the claim that the tax code subsidizes companies that ship jobs overseas. It's hardly a "subsidy" to only tax companies on domestic income. By liberal standards if a company packed up and completely left the US, it would be getting a subsidy since it no longer had to pay US taxes.
If implemented, cap and trade could easily become one of the biggest means of corporate welfare in the country. A carbon tax would be equitable, but any sort of system where carbon credits are distributed for free to existing polluters is ripe for abuse.

srsly. this guy has to be fucking kidding.
"Oh, well defense doesn't count, and the bailouts don't really count because that just happened and I opposed them, and tax breaks, meh, and subsidies aren't a good example, and export-import bank, etc..."
the whole fucking economy is corporate welfare.
