It wasn't like it was a bar fight or anything. Till supposedly whistled at Bryant's wife on the 24th. Bryant and his half brother, Milam, did not come for Till until the morning of the 28th. They kidnapped him at gunpoint, took him to Milam's shed and beat him, and then executed him with a .45.
And, of course, eventually an all white, all male jury acquitted Bryant and Milam, without their ever taking the stand, despite eyewitness testimony identifying them. The defense attorney argued that if they didn't acquit, "Your ancestors will turn over in their grave, and I'm sure every last Anglo-Saxon one of you has the courage to free these men." The reporters attending the trial heard laughter from the jury box, and one juror later said, "We wouldn't have taken so long if we hadn't stopped to drink pop."
If that isn't a racially-motivated execution without due process (a lynching), I don't know what is. |
