that sucks dog, sorry to hear that.
anecdotally, i know a fed magistrate clerk who is leaving to do biglaw and then has an appellate clerkship lined up. Not sure if she is just lucky or what.

In the past, fed and state prosecutor offices would temporarily swap prosecutors if they had a joint-task force. But because you had to be a federal prosecutor to work at the USAO, that USAO would create an empty "Special AUSA" slot and "hire" you on an uncompensated basis (because you still drew state salary).
But now, certain districts -- especially ones near the border -- are flooded with fed cases. To help deal with the caseload, the corresponding USAO offices will often take on several "volunteer" AUSA for a year to help prosecute these cases. I've seen these positions posted for Sacramento, Baltimore, etc.
I think you are a good candidate because (1) you have prior USAO experience; (2) you are in a border state; and (3) you have good creds (clerkship is clutch for USAO) but don't have a job. Most of your competition will suck because you can't practice law outside the USAO while you work there, and they won't take deferrals.
I applied to several of these in the past and received "callbacks" but they were always skeptical (and rightfully so) that I'd give up my current job to work for free.

Must underscore the importance of a Judge going to bat for you. I got one interview just because the USAO was curious what my Judge thought re: the quality of work product from his/her office.
It's also a good idea to exercise the AUSA connections. If you can work them in, you have a way better chance than the average joe.
The S-AUSA interviews are no joke -- had one with seven fed prosecutors firing off questions at me for several hours, all at the same time.

Shit, I'm in the same boat. Graduated 2008, got axed by big law early of 2010, my firm had 80 incoming 1st years, got rid of 40 stealth manner, myself included, fuck! I've been unemployed now for over 1 year! Nobody in a respectable firm will interview me. The only job offers I've had have been for like loan mods attorney. I don't know wtf todo.
I took the GMAT and applied to several b-schools, god I hope I get in. I saved all my biglaw money so I would not have to take on too much debt for the MBA. This is the my current fall back plan.
I hate this fkn profession, seriously, did people 10 years ago have to jump through as many fucking hurdles to land a decent law job and career. Law has become the worst decision of my life. I posted a fake ad on Craigslist to see how many people were applying to the same jobs that I was, I recieved over 300 resumes in 2 days. I was fucking SHOCKED!!!! Panic mode took over and I decided to start studying for the GMAT. Getting a law job is like winning the dam lottery! Fuck this shit!

I'm aiming top 20. I did a top 5, couple of top 15s. I dont need to go into I-banking or something super prestigious that only HBS will get you. I really just want like a decent career, not greedy for money. Right now, if i could get a law job making 60k i'd be all over it, I just dont want to do like personal injury or bankruptcy.
GMAT- I thought it was harder than the LSAT, the verbal section on GMAT is almost identical to LSAT, the reading comp is identical, the logical reasoning is easier on GMAT. There are no logic games on GMAT. There is sentence correction on GMAT which can be a bitch if you are not a grammer horr.
The math section on the GMAT was tough because of the time factor. It is really easy math, but the time makes it tough. Plus, there is a lot of mental things you need to block out, because the test gets easier or harder depending on how you are doing. So it is kind of hard to block out how you think you are doing in the middle of the test based on the types of questions you see. If you see really easy questions, you might think, fuck I'm bombing this exam.

yea, he struggled with that major. It was one of the hardest at our school, average time to complete was 5 years. He worked full time while trying to study for the gmat, so that was probably a big part of it.
Oh the guy saying he bought the big book and got a 780, I don't know, I spent 1g on the private course, I thought the big book questions were WAY easier than the actual test.

yea, I know it is my "backup plan" if I dont get a job by this September. I would rather do part time MBA, but fck it is so hard to find a law job!
Yea 720 was only 94%, I hated the computer adaptive shit, It really messed with my head during the test, i kept thinking whether the problems i was getting would be considered hard or easy, hard to block that aspect.

Aren't you the guy who gave up YLS to be with his wife?
Don't killself yourself, brother. You have a lifetime ahead of you to do something with yourself. You're intelligent; you'll do well.

what are ur law school stats? No summer firm? Are you applying only the secondary market where ur wife is?
Market matters; I'd expect e.g. a SDNY magistrate clerk or NY court of appeals clerk could find at least some midlaw firm in NYC
edit: so ur in Texas. Yeah, it's a smaller market, though supposedly the economy there is doing better

Are you qualified for a stat PhD program? In general, PhD's are shit, pure shit, but there is enough demand from industry that stat PhD's don't seem to have much trouble finding jobs. And the PhD program at Texas A&M is actually respectable.
Unfortunately admissions to PhD programs are absurdly competitive right now, and the admissions process is largely a crap shoot. It often comes down to the vagaries of the committee (or member of the committee) that reviews your file. In general, though, I have a hard time believing that many places would autoding you simply because you went to law school. If anything, it indicates that you can withstand the stress of an advanced degree program. I would say the most important factors are grades (particularly grades in advanced math courses), recommendations, research experience, and GRE scores, in roughly that order.
A stat MS might be a viable option as well. Typically the admissions standards for MS programs are much lower. The biggest downside is that your earnings will most likely top out in the high six figures and you'll probably be a SAS monkey the rest of your life. But at least it's a job.

"I think it may be true that Fortune is the arbiter of half of our actions, but that she still leaves the other half of them, more or less, to be governed by us."- Niccolo Machiavelli.
Unfortunately, I have not had "Fortune" on my side ever. I graduated Computer Science in 02', and the tech bubble burst!
Graduated law skool in 08' and guess what...yep! I'm going to graduate with my MBA in a few years, and America will no longer be on a map. haha. At least i'm super fit, being unemployed is not all that bad, I go on my road bike 30 miles a day, go the gym at night, am in the greatest shape of my life. I'm doing well with the ladies, haha. I'm actually really happy. But fuck, I need a job too!!!!
