In the past, fed and state prosecutor offices would temporarily swap prosecutors if they had a joint-task force. But because you had to be a federal prosecutor to work at the USAO, that USAO would create an empty "Special AUSA" slot and "hire" you on an uncompensated basis (because you still drew state salary).

But now, certain districts -- especially ones near the border -- are flooded with fed cases. To help deal with the caseload, the corresponding USAO offices will often take on several "volunteer" AUSA for a year to help prosecute these cases. I've seen these positions posted for Sacramento, Baltimore, etc.

I think you are a good candidate because (1) you have prior USAO experience; (2) you are in a border state; and (3) you have good creds (clerkship is clutch for USAO) but don't have a job. Most of your competition will suck because you can't practice law outside the USAO while you work there, and they won't take deferrals.

I applied to several of these in the past and received "callbacks" but they were always skeptical (and rightfully so) that I'd give up my current job to work for free.

Maybe, but I doubt it because they'd be even more bored with trying fed misdemeanors and mortgage fraud as an S-AUSA.

Must underscore the importance of a Judge going to bat for you. I got one interview just because the USAO was curious what my Judge thought re: the quality of work product from his/her office.

It's also a good idea to exercise the AUSA connections. If you can work them in, you have a way better chance than the average joe.

The S-AUSA interviews are no joke -- had one with seven fed prosecutors firing off questions at me for several hours, all at the same time.

That particular S-AUSA position was partly-compensated, but I get the sense that these positions are the "real deal." USAOs seem very tight-knit, and they really want to know if you're a team player. If you've already mock interviewed with 3 AUSAs, then you're already ahead of the curve.

I'd poke around their website to see if they have any interesting cases you can learn about. Also, it helps if you express enthusiasm for "boring" areas of AUSA work, like forfeiture, immigration violations, etc.

I think forfeiture work is underrated because you often encounter forfeiture issues in biglaw white-collar litigation. Moreover, because there's civil and criminal forfeiture, you can presumably take depos and also do forfeiture "indictments" and get portable experience.

Shit, I'm in the same boat. Graduated 2008, got axed by big law early of 2010, my firm had 80 incoming 1st years, got rid of 40 stealth manner, myself included, fuck! I've been unemployed now for over 1 year! Nobody in a respectable firm will interview me. The only job offers I've had have been for like loan mods attorney. I don't know wtf todo.

I took the GMAT and applied to several b-schools, god I hope I get in. I saved all my biglaw money so I would not have to take on too much debt for the MBA. This is the my current fall back plan.

I hate this fkn profession, seriously, did people 10 years ago have to jump through as many fucking hurdles to land a decent law job and career. Law has become the worst decision of my life. I posted a fake ad on Craigslist to see how many people were applying to the same jobs that I was, I recieved over 300 resumes in 2 days. I was fucking SHOCKED!!!! Panic mode took over and I decided to start studying for the GMAT. Getting a law job is like winning the dam lottery! Fuck this shit!

I don't think big law firm experience would be considered "shit." I also had 2 years work experience prior to law skool, so I guess its up in the air how it goes. I know several people who got in with much less work experience. I did decent on the gmat (720) and have great law school stats gpa, etc, 168 Lsat, okay undergrad shit, was a computer science major which was hard as fuck! I'm scrambling to get a job so I could apply to maybe a part time MBA, which is a hell of alot easier to get in, plus working would be nice.

I'm aiming top 20. I did a top 5, couple of top 15s. I dont need to go into I-banking or something super prestigious that only HBS will get you. I really just want like a decent career, not greedy for money. Right now, if i could get a law job making 60k i'd be all over it, I just dont want to do like personal injury or bankruptcy.

GMAT- I thought it was harder than the LSAT, the verbal section on GMAT is almost identical to LSAT, the reading comp is identical, the logical reasoning is easier on GMAT. There are no logic games on GMAT. There is sentence correction on GMAT which can be a bitch if you are not a grammer horr.

The math section on the GMAT was tough because of the time factor. It is really easy math, but the time makes it tough. Plus, there is a lot of mental things you need to block out, because the test gets easier or harder depending on how you are doing. So it is kind of hard to block out how you think you are doing in the middle of the test based on the types of questions you see. If you see really easy questions, you might think, fuck I'm bombing this exam.

They got into top 20. One got a job making 6 figures after graduating, but his parents are SUPER loaded and he quit to do his own business. The other got into a top 20 too, his parents are super loaded too and he can pretty much get any job he wants with his connections. My other buddy got into top 15, but maybe minority status helped. My buddies say with my creds I should aim for top 5 school, but I really dont desire to get the cream of the crop i-banking job. I just want something decent.

The big book 800 questions were mostly (to me) like 1 sentence questions that I could answer in a minute. I got a lot more lengthy word problems on the actual test, which were easy but time consuming. It was nice seeing the permutation problems, because those generally were only for people doing good.

It shouldn't have been at the end, generally after the first 10 questions, you should receive the hard math questions if you are doing well, the test will readjust within 3 or 4 questions. I don't know. Crazy though, I finished the verbal section with like 25 minutes left. haha, blew through it.

what are ur law school stats? No summer firm? Are you applying only the secondary market where ur wife is?

Market matters; I'd expect e.g. a SDNY magistrate clerk or NY court of appeals clerk could find at least some midlaw firm in NYC

edit: so ur in Texas. Yeah, it's a smaller market, though supposedly the economy there is doing better

Are you qualified for a stat PhD program? In general, PhD's are shit, pure shit, but there is enough demand from industry that stat PhD's don't seem to have much trouble finding jobs. And the PhD program at Texas A&M is actually respectable.

Unfortunately admissions to PhD programs are absurdly competitive right now, and the admissions process is largely a crap shoot. It often comes down to the vagaries of the committee (or member of the committee) that reviews your file. In general, though, I have a hard time believing that many places would autoding you simply because you went to law school. If anything, it indicates that you can withstand the stress of an advanced degree program. I would say the most important factors are grades (particularly grades in advanced math courses), recommendations, research experience, and GRE scores, in roughly that order.

A stat MS might be a viable option as well. Typically the admissions standards for MS programs are much lower. The biggest downside is that your earnings will most likely top out in the high six figures and you'll probably be a SAS monkey the rest of your life. But at least it's a job.

IMO, a stats master degree is one of the few masters degrees worth getting. It opens doors to many federal jobs you've never heard of -- data analysis at OSHA, CDC, EPA, etc. -- and while you work there, you rack up conf. papers and publications that will help you get into a PHD or MD program if you so desire.

Yep, I agree with this. Moreover, funding is available for MS programs in stat at many schools. Usually MS students are lower on the food chain than PhD students when it comes to funding opportunities, so it is kind of hit and miss, but funding definitely exist. A stat MS is a credited option for people who can do math but can't find jobs.

Caveat: The only stat MS people I have known got their degrees at highly-ranked schools. I have no idea what the job market is like if you get an MS in stat at a TTT. As with any graduate program, one should do one's homework before buying.

By the time ITE started, I was a 6th year and they needed to keep me. So now I make $300K, and I'm not all that smart or hardworking. Lifes a bitch aint it?

"I think it may be true that Fortune is the arbiter of half of our actions, but that she still leaves the other half of them, more or less, to be governed by us."- Niccolo Machiavelli.

Unfortunately, I have not had "Fortune" on my side ever. I graduated Computer Science in 02', and the tech bubble burst!

Graduated law skool in 08' and guess what...yep! I'm going to graduate with my MBA in a few years, and America will no longer be on a map. haha. At least i'm super fit, being unemployed is not all that bad, I go on my road bike 30 miles a day, go the gym at night, am in the greatest shape of my life. I'm doing well with the ladies, haha. I'm actually really happy. But fuck, I need a job too!!!!

yea, I never understood the senior associates. They make alot of $$$ but had all this fancy shit, nice condos, cars etc. Spend everything they make it seems. I saved every fking penny of my big law job knowing there was a good chance I would get axed. If I could have had my job for 2 or 3 more years, I would have saved half a million and moved to some 3rd world country and retired. You can live in central american CHEAP like 3 bucks for lobster dinner! Surf all day. Just O.J. the wife man. haha.
