I got dinged trying to apply for the Marines 6 years after receiving treatment for depression; this was even before law school, when I wanted to enlist. Couldn't even get a waiver. That's about the extent of it so far. I was told that if I reapply after 10 years has passed it should be less of an issue though.

NOTE: I am not recommending lying on a federal or military job application. This is wrong and may violate various laws. I am merely posing a hypothetical for the sake of discussion.

if you read the sf-86 or whatever the app is called, you can answer no if you had anxiety or depression related to a "family" problem -ie death/divorce/lay off. That said, I don't think that people who are prone to depression and anxiety should volunteer for combat. But since we are (failed) lawyers, I think we can safely interpret that question to include a lot of common things that people suffer that leads them to seeking treatment.

is that true about sf-86? It's such a weird thing when you think about though... like if you don't tell anyone because you are worried about clearances or c&f or something and it gets worse or makes you a terrible employee or you do something about it, get it treated but don't get a job because of it? We live in such a strange society.

I have a lawyerly question about SF-86. I'm not applying for anything right now; was just looking through to see if my personal depression history would be an issue now--it's not, there's a "in the past 7 years" prefix.

This one question (23a): In the past 7 years, have you illegally used any controlled substance....

If I ate a brownie in Amsterdam 5 years ago, where it is decriminalized but still less than legal, could I reasonably say no to this?

i took antidepressants on a whim from the ages of 18-22 and it has ruined my professional life. also, when i came off the antidepressants i became so agitated that i checked myself into a mental hospital, which is probably more damning than having been on the meds in the first place.

at first the hospital didn't want to admit me, because i didn't seem crazy enough. so i came back later that evening and told them i thought i was being controlled by aliens. this is all on file somewhere, i'm sure.

Yeah stay away from the men in the white coats. I am telling you dude its like having a felony on your record. It could keeping you from buying a gun, joining the military, getting a security clearance, and could even show up in a background check for a legal job.

That said, just man up. If you have a real problem and your seeing green men in trench coats, then go get help. If you contemplating killing yourself regularly or others go seek help. Otherwise, just man up, and buy a good book on the subject. Shrinks are mostly quacks, its that simple!

This search returns medical records for personal use, insurance companies, attorneys and other qualified users.

Peoples medical information does not only reside at their Doctor's office. Today, individual health and medical data is collected, collated, stored, analyzed and distributed in unprecedented quantities and put to diverse uses.

Payers can not only tap patient data for claims payment; they use it for utilization review, underwriting and coverage decisions.

Employers use health data to reduce their health care and workers compensation costs, as well as to identify employees who may be costly in the future.

The skinny on background checks

An employer must ask your permission to conduct a background check on a form separate from an application or other paperwork. If a potential employer wants to talk to your friends, associates or neighbors, they must get a separate consent for what is known as an investigative consumer report. In addition, if an employer wants to see your medical records, you must give specific consent.

Once you give your consent, employers have broad latitude to inquire into your background. According to the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse, a consumer rights organization, areas of inquiry can include:

* Driving records

* Vehicle registration

* Credit records

* Criminal records

* Social Security Number

* Education records

* Court records

* Workers' compensation

* Bankruptcy

* Character references

* Neighbor interviews

* Medical records

* Property ownership

* Military records

* State licensing records

* Drug test records

* Past employers

* Personal references

* Incarceration records

* Sex offender lists

So you mean if they ask why I want to join the Army, I can't say I have a death wish?

if basic depression is as problematic as people are saying it is i can't imagine why more people didn't fabricate mental illness to get out of being drafted. how hard would it be to visit a few psychiatrists, get that in your file and find someone to say you're seriously depressed and suicidal?

But in those days depressed people were locked up in Bellevue and given shock treatment and lobotomies. I think even war was preferable. 20th century medicine is so barbaric. They didn't even have containment fields during surgical procedures!

Only in government and military. They don't search your medical records, though, contrary to what some poasters said. It's all disclosure. (I don't know about Top Secret Clearances, I don't have one).

Note: I am not condoning lying, as this would be wrong.

Outside of government, no one gives a shit.
