I can't believe radio stations like NPR will accept ads from a scam company like www.reputation.com
Did they just completely forget how Reputation Defender ripped off its customers and actually worsened their online presence?

The Reputation Defender [Reputation.com] Scam
Every time they play a group of commercials on the radio, they always seem to play an ad for a company called Reputation Defender (aka Reputation.com http://www.reputation.com/). Reputation Defender is an online company that, for a monthly cost, searches the Internet for websites that mention you or your company and rates the results based on how they think it impacts your reputation. If they come across something that they think hurts your reputation, you can pay them about $30.00 per web page to get the information removed from the website.
How do they remove the information from websites? By sending the website owner an email that says little more than "please remove the information on your website". Then the owner of the website can choose to remove it or not. If they chose not to remove the information, you do not get your money back from Reputation Defender. So Reputation Defender charges you $30.00 to send a template email to the website owner to ask if they would remove the information. Though your reputation online is important, Reputation Defender does nothing you can not do yourself.
First start by going to Google and searching for your company name in quotes followed by the city your company is in, such as:
"Company Name" Knoxville
It is also beneficial to play around with Google's advanced search to see what other search entries work best for finding information about your company. Next go to Pipl at http://pipl.com and search for yourself. If you find any negative information on a website about your company or yourself, contact the owner of the website. If you are unable to find an email address on the website, try entering the domain name into http://whois.domaintools.com/ and you should get a valid email address to contact the website owner with.
Email the website owner asking if they would remove the information and why, asking nicely can go a long way. If what is on the website is defaming and fails information, than be a little more assertive in your email and say that you will take legal action if you need to. If the website owner is unwilling to remove the information and you think that it is defaming and fails information, seek the advice of a lawyer.

given that Google now autofills "Reputation.com scam" and "Reputation.com complaints", who'd hire these tools?

Ahh. I really wish I read this website before giving reputation defender and their giant scam way too much money.
I want my money back Michael Fertik! You are not going to scam me out of thousands of dollars this easily.
Literally, all the service they sold me was a bunch of free websites. They are all the popular social sites and are easy to sign up for. After digging around, found Searchmanipulator, they gave me 18 more websites than Reputation.com did, and you can do it yourself for $29.99 (which I did and it was suprisingly quick) with some Google program that has the forms already filled out and gives you messages being like "hey do this here".
If you want it free, here is the websites they used for me...just make sure to do the backlinks and that stuff.

I took your advice, gentleman above me, and hired Search Manipulator for my small business after having huge issues with Reputation.com.
Reputation kept asking for more and more money for more websites, it was absurd. I didn't use the $30 software from searchmanipulator.com, but instead had them do 65 websites for me. Search Manipulator charged me 15% of what reputation.com did and gave me more than 3x websites! Search Manipulator openly admits too that anyone can do this, and it shouldnt cost that much. Avoid Reputation.com at all costs friends, its time consuming work, but not thousands of dollars time consuming.
Here is the sites they used for me:
