Asked the students if they read magazines. Some did - Vibe, US Weekly, Teen People. One student asked his classmate, "Nigga, what be magazines?" The other kids response was, "Nigga is you stupid or for real?"

He wasn't the only one, apparently. I then had them answer several questions about a product based on a xerox from a magazine. I noticed when grading the classwork now that half the students wrote "The Cover Story" for the name of the magazine.

My admin suggested doing an intro lesson on how to read a magazine. Our country has a bright future ahead.

Something like this happened at my school last year. Same thing. Took the boy down to police station, they gave him a scary speech. He'll be in our school->jail externship program soon.

Mostly white, one hispanic bro. Lots of TFA/Fellows that they grind through.

Today in a truly cringeworthy moment, on one of the worksheets, one of them misspelled WRITING as WRITTING on the heading and then proceeded to get pretty much everything wrong. I wrote, "Try harder to spell the name of the class right, but otherwise nice effort Dayshanqueesha!"

This is one of my best students.

Also, regular names misspelled in new hysterical ways, like Jaymes. Joshewa, Dayna, Andrue, Shavon, etc

I won't print a lot of them because they're so bizarre as to prove identifiable.

The trend with urban blacks is for more normal names though.
