Man, this is frustrating. Two jobs that looked awesome, got down to me and one other person after multiple rounds of interviews, and they took the other person for each.

The fact that the hours requirements are almost the same, and the pay cut is usually like 100k including bonus makes it tough to make this jump

new plan is to milk biglaw as long as possible until I find an inhouse job or get pushed out.

to be fair, my job usually a lot less stressful than biglaw and the gap in comp is closer to $40K than $100K.

true about the stress and client expectations....

as for comp, I will make about 320k all in this year if I stick around....most midlaw places, if I want to bill 1900 hours, aren't promising more than $190k+bonus (which could be $0 with mediocre hours)....so probably about $100k difference for me....maybe even more.

This past year as a 5th year you made $230 base and a $25K bonus right? How does that translate into $320K all in this year if you get bumped to $250K base?

sorry, I'm a 2005. So this year I make $265k...assuming the same bonuses as last year I would have a $55k bonus...for $320k total.

Compression in midlaw is a bitch so as an 05' I don't make much more than you as an 07'...

lifestyle midlaw is a joke in a large market.

billing 1900 hours in midlaw with cheapass clients is a lot tougher than billing 1900 in biglaw.

Yeah, the cheap ass clients would be tough...I work on transactions where no one even looks at the bill... They just pay it. But some smaller clients are sticklers...and yeah, you end under billing because you know how anal they will be.

in-house is the way to go.

unfortunately for me, non-ip/employment lit has fucked me for most in-house jerbs and i am trying to figure out my exit strategy.

good luck with your search. i've found that milking those law school/former law firm associate connections can bring up promising leads since most people are no longer with firms by the time of year 5+.

What year are you?

Yeah, I am just chugging along. If I don't get an inhouse job I might just do biglaw as long as possible, save money and move to SE Asia....my wife can work from anywhere and that plus our savings would be more than enough to live very nicely..
