Hello everybody,
I have recently discovered that I am a skinny fat male. I am about 5'9, and weigh about 155 pounds. I used to weigh 185 pounds. Now I am technically in my ideal height range, but am still very flabby.
How do I get in shape? For exercise I had been running and walking. Thanks everyone!

There isn't some ideal formula that I'm aware of, but I often do "two a days," where I run several miles then later on hit the gym for lifting. I vary my speed while running to keep my cardio up, and sometimes drop down for 20-25 pushups during the run just to mix up the monotony and challenge my heart rate. Lift AND run several times a week to get a muscular, lean body. Still, this body is contingent upon you eating right. If you have a high enough metabolism, you may be able to get away with less healthy eating from time to time, but make sure you are getting plenty of good protein to maximize the production of your lifting sessions. This is crucial for preventing your running routine from making you too thin, unless you want a runner's body (nothing wrong with that at all.) Throw in some boxing if you can, and activities like rowing can really create that vascular physique you desire. Depending on your city, there might be a rowing club you can join.

I'm in the same boat. 6', 160, flabby. I don't work out, but know that I need to lift weights... it's just that I really don't know where to start. I've never done it before. I don't have a gym membership. I am sort of intimidated by the idea.
One reason I am reluctant to start is that I know I'll be weak as fukk at to start. I know that improvements will come really fast at first, but I really hate the idea of doing a bunch of weak-ass lifts in front of gymbros.
General lack of motivation as well. I got a Fitocracy account but haven't used it. I bought Rippletoe's Starting Strength but haven't cracked it yet.

get a trainer or join a boot camp. If money is an issue, I'd maybe begin by running, just to get in cardio shape before getting into lifting routines. While starting w/ running, I'd also start doing your basic elementary school exercises: jump rope, push ups, planks (not a fan of situps myself), chinups/pullups if you can manage. Get a foundation of upper body strength by creating a push up routine. Do body squats as well. Then, start hitting the gym for lifting. Squats w/ weights, bench press, thrusters, etc. Don't be self-conscious about how much weight you put on the bar, bro. I'm pretty fit, and I don't judge some neophyte bro repping the bar for the first time. It's admirable. When heading to the gym, leave your ego at the door. Chances are, there will always be bigger dudes and weaker dudes than you. Just a fact of life.

This winter has been awful for getting outside. Too much snow/ice/cold to get into an outdoor running routine, not enough snow to do XC skiing.
I don't have a pullup bar. I do have 1 pair of dumbbells. I guess I'll try and get semi-fit before joining a gym.
How much does a membership cost? I'm thinking of a place like Anytime Fitness.

1) fuck SS, fuck GOMAD. since you have it, go thru it and cherry pick what is what.
2) no one in the gym doing real work cares about what you do. as a matter of fact, they silently respect everyone going hard in the gym and showing respect. even though it's quiet as shit at times, we are all in it together.
3) ask an alpha gymbro to walk you through 2 or so weeks. most good ones will GLADLY do so.
good luck.

there are only two variables to work with here: fat and muscle.
if you want to be less flabby but still the same basic size, lose fat and gain muscle in some sequence, by bulking/cutting.
if you want to be more muscular but less fat, bulk up then cut (or cut then bulk).
that's the extent of what you can do -- you can cut or you can bulk.
when you cut (decrease bodyfat), eat enough (including lots of protein) to lose 1 pound a week, and keep lifting weights.
when you bulk (increase muscle mass), eat just enough to gain 1 pound a week while lifting weights and consuming 1g protein per pound of body weight daily.
cut/bulk/bulk/cut = eventual body recomposition.
