Brioni, Prada, Paul Smith, and John Varvatos are not "New York in the know." They're top-end, well-known brands that you can get at Neiman Marcus, Barneys, or Saks around the country. Not at Nordstrom.

This isn't bad, but Barney's is way more upscale than you give it credit for (at least the NYC store). They carry Kiton, Isaia, Berluti, Charvet, etc. - it's a lot closer to Bergdorf than to Bloomingdale's.

Saks' selection has actually moved somewhat downmarket in the last few years, although it's probably still better than Nordstrom.

A Nordstrom suit for work is good enough. And it will last and is decently respectable.

To my thinking, more than that will net you, "Are we paying this guy too much?" But I'm not biglaw.

yeah my vague understanding is that that's where the subhuman rednecks congregate. I mean, it's all relative. I'm a Philadelphian of a not terribly rich background; all our lives my family's shopped at bloomingdale's, which I guess is probably a bit above our means/my law school indebtedness. anyway once I mentioned bloomingdale's to a very sweet, but rather rich, girl from dallas, and she said that, where she was from at least (she was trying to be polite), bloomingdale's was really ghetto. only neiman marcus was acceptable there, she said

lol not even close. Saks is way more prestigious than Nordstorms. The saks near me, the cheapest women's handbag was around $200 for a tiny piece of shit on sale. At Nordstorm they sell $30 purses.

Someone please educate me on these so-called department stores. I have never set foot in one in my time in NYC so I have no fucking clue other than knowing chicks who buy shit at bergdorf's. Which are top tier, etc?

I have my suits and shirts made to measure, my shoes I get from Allen Edmonds, ties from the Hermes or Ferragamo stores. Casual wear from Filson, Orvis, Barbour, RL or BB. If I go to these department stores would any of these brands be sold at a decent price? what is the allure of these places?

Thanks XO
