They also played a very negative role in our marriage; encouraging my ex to move back home cross-country, building a mother-in law apartment for her so that she'd move back, etc. Her father said I was godless because I'm vocal about my distaste for prosperity gospel televangelists.

Immediately the son starts spending like it's going out of style. He immediately spends several hundred k turning the formerly utilitarian office space into a luxurious mahogany paneled suite, complete with filtration system so he can smoke cigars. He also buys a $1M mcmansion in town and a another in the southwest, plus four brand new Porsche Cayenne Turbos (two black and two white) so he and his wife would each have a Cayenne at both houses, and starts taking employees on $$$$ trips to Vegas, then knocks up his secretary - a woman from Barbados or Jamaica or something - and gets divorced and shacks up with his new baby momma.

Despite the fact that they'd just bought a very successful business and were given sweetheart leases at $1/ft^2, when the going rate for prime retail was $2.50 to $3.50/ft^2, the son decides he's a turnaround artist and fires all of the upper management, eliminates employee profit sharing and reduces employee pay, which cost him a bunch of loyal employees. He also starts consolidating locations and closes the branch located at the busiest intersection in town, only to immediately open up another location nearby with less traffic and zero visibility from the road just two miles away. Less than 10 years later, the business was loaded with debt and had lost more than 40% of its revenue compared to the early 2000s. In just 8 years it went from $21M annually to just under $12M annually, so bankruptcy was inevitable. Despite being very successful, her grandparents are super frugal and down to earth.
